"Our result will reflect that the corporate market is under pressure, and that household income is under pressure," Baron-Hay said. "It underlies the challenge we and the code have in growing the market.
Also reflects that we have, by and large, played pretty crap footy this year Myles.
If the AFL doesn't blame the economic downturn for the drop in crowds and profit then they are lying or just have no idea.
Let me give you some info from an industry that was one of the first hit by the double whammy of interest rate rises and fuel price rises around November last year.
Yes the fuel industry; almost overnight in November fuel sales of Motor Spirit dipped 15% on the highways out of Sydney because a lot of people stopped going away at weekends and the grey nomads decided to stay at home. In store sales at servos dropped to levels not seen for many years and even on the highways well north of Sydney the impact was similar.
You would expect the snow season might cause the situation to just snap back into shape; no such luck. Down Canberra way they are saying the snow season is one of the slowest on the roads for years. I don't know the stats at the resorts but on the roads nothing has changed. We are only now seeing the grey nomads getting back on the road for a belated winter holiday because the price of fuel has dropped, and they appear to be coming from the south.
Those crowds quoted show a drop of 26% at Telstra Stadium which clearly shows that Sydney people are hurting probably more than any other capital city. It also reflects that there is less discretionary spending or people have decided to spend less on going to the footy and memberships.
Trouble is in Sydney they have to fight tooth and nail to get people back as members more than the footballing states. In Victoria they will buy memberships rather than feed the kids.
Hopefully when the economy gets back on track members will come back and crowds go back up, provided we keep up in the top half of teams.
As far as the AFL is concerned you have to wonder what they are on.
My parents aren't members for various reasons, but they love to go to the footy. They live a short walk from TS.
They went to the Cats game, and asked to buy seats in there favourite spot. They were told they were sold out.
They tried a window in a different part of the ground and got the same story. The next best seats available, were out of there price range. So they went home and watched it on TV.
Then to there amazament, they saw the seats they wanted were empty.
I wonder how many other prospective patrons, get turned off by this sort of ludicrous situation.

The Canberra game v Melbourne this year I went on line to buy tickets 2 weeks before the game. Best available were rubbish. A couple of days later the same thing. 2 days before the game best available were bay 1 in the Hawke (or Menzies) terrace. It was only because of a change of circumstances that I tried again. Otherwise I would have watched on TV. What goes on?

They should take it up with the club, as should ROK with his experience trying to buy tickets for the games at Manuka Oval. Otherwise, the club may not be aware of the extent to which people have trouble buying tickets for games in Sydney and Canberra.
It also seems to me that this year the club is more interested in selling tickets to its bloody raffle than it is in getting people to the games. I am really sick of that ad with Luke Ablett. I didnt seen any ads for the Geelong game nor any yet for the Brisbane game. I think the club needs to rethink its marketing priorities.

That's bothered me a bit this year (the lack of advertising for games, not Luke in the raffle ads). I don't watch a great deal of TV, but I'm pretty sure I have seen significantly fewer ads for games this year.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I'm not sure they could be bothered. They tried to inquire about membership a few years ago and got fobbed off (over the phone) so they didn't bother following that up either.
Attendances at the SCG would have to be down this year due to the constuction going on, that must play some part in a down of profit
I doubt it. There have been plenty of empty seats in just about all the other stands this year. There's no reason why the construction of the other stand would have anything to do with that.

I think there's a public perception that you cant just rock up to the SCG and buy tickets on match day, which is another problem the club needs to address.
How is it that 45,000 average for TS games is a problem?

The number of times Sydney have had a prime time game on TV and have played like busted ar...... has been a significant turnoff for 'winners are grinners' followers and they have staayed at home next game.......
