I think Longmire is one of the best credentialed in the league to take over.

I don't think his work as our midfield coach or as 'coaching co-ordinator' backs this up. And clearly St Kilda had reservations otherwise he would be coaching at Morrabin.

If Roos was to go we'd be better off getting in a coach from outside the existing structure with new ideas and a better grasp of the modern game.

Leigh Matthews would be my choice. By the end of next year he may make way at Brisbane to allow Vossy to take over.

Although much to Connolly's chargrin, Lethal brings unquestioned credentials and experience to the role. It would give him the possibility to win flags at 3 different clubs as coach.

And importantly for Sydney and the AFL, his profile is such that he can takeover from Roos as the face of the club in the media.

I dont think St Kilda should be looked at as the beacon of good decision making when considering Longmire. In fact with the way St Kilda has been run over the years it is almost a blessing to be overlooked.

Agree that Matthews (and for that matter malthouse (i can hear the howls already ))) are other possibilities and better credentialed but my comment was based on the current lot of assistant coaches and preordained media types out there (read buckley etc).

I don't want Matthews but I'd take Malthouse like a shot. Long term I'd like to see Maxfield as an assistant working the midfield and see how he develops; I am not impressed with the results of Longmire's time there. Does anyone know enough about the other assistants to say what they might do?

Yes, but at the end of next year (as Hammo said), he may use that 1 years experience and take over from Matthews.

It's been well documented that Voss has, or should have, a clause which allows him to get out if a seniors position is offered elsewhere. Apparently a standard clause in most, if not all, assistants contracts.

As u say sprite, it certainly is an interesting position with Voss/McKenna/Bris/GC17.

Maxfield would most likely say no, because the reason he moved back to Melbourne was to be closer to his family (and all that jazz).

i think its too hard to judge from outside the club. Its not like we have been a terrible side, we are playing some rubbish footy but will make the finals again.

I think if roos has the passion he should keep going, from all reports he is a good communicator etc, i think he just needs to be willing to let go of the older players who he loves.

All good and well to inject youth, but they need to be injected into key spots and be taking control of the play.

Roos got the job done with the players he had. With the rule changes, he will need different types of players to do it again. That's the long and the short of it

i agree with darren's comments. roos built a game plan within the then rules which relied on smallish defenders chopping arms, power forwards pushing in the back, shop dinky passes delivered by buchanan and midfielders going to ground to ensure stoppages - luke ablett, bolton kirk etc

almost all of the above have changed since 2005 and our team well designed for 2005 football is both old, slow and poorly designed for modern football. it is really a question of whether we can change personnel quickly enough and the coaching crew change their thinking to reflect the current rules

2005 is not exactly the distant past.

Even with the rule changes I reckon the 2005 swans team would give the 2008 swans team a pasting. (taking same players against each other in their form of 2005 v 2008). Ball would kill Everitt, Williams would run rings through the centre.

I agree that in 2008 the new rules mean you cant play exactly as Sydney did in 2005 but our game plan of 2005 wouldnt be so bad and could be tweaked to the new rules were it not for our relatively poor execution of the main components of it in 2008 (ie midfield pressure, short accurate passing, players running to space and working for each other). In 2005 you would never have seen the amount of run from the middle that teams seem to get against the swans or the free players that seemed to abound in the collingwood centre and half forward line on the attack last weekend.

Roos needs a new team that he can adapt a new game plan to, the Swans dont need a new coach.

We need Roos to commit to a longer term - NOW ( I would say a minimum of three years) - to put some stability in place for recruiting the types of players needed.

As I see it a new coach can develop their own strategy for recruiting players and game day plan, rather than picking the pieces of what was put in place short term.

But we do definitely need to move some of the cattle on.
