    For The Optimists

After spending all of sunday ruminating over last nights loss, the anger has settled and I'm ready to look to the future.
Next week's game against brisbane will be a close scrap (possibly high scoring) but i think we'll win. We have to.
Last home game of the H&A season, possibly farewelling a few players at the same time (you've got to hope so...please leo) the boys are going to want a win baaaadd. Especially considering all the flak they have received since last night and will continue to receive all week.

    So i think we'll win.

So what will the win do?

Permitting one of Collingwood, Kangaroos, or Adelaide lose next week and we win, we could win the chance to play our elimination final AT HOME.

Out of those three matches I think the crows and collingwood are most in danger, playing the bullies and fremantle at subi respectively.

Elimination Final: Home crowd, big crowd, the injection of some more youngsters....anything can happen.

Even with a loss, the experience will be great for our youngsters.

(If we got the home elimination final and it was, say, against collingwood....would that be played at Telstra or the SCG?)

    Telstra: No hope.
SCG: Haven't played them there in years...an unknown.
    WE NEED CHEESE!!!

We wouldn't play Collingwood at home, it would be either Saints or Adelaide.

I would wish that we play at the SCG, but that wont happen... it will be the Olympic venue (which IMHO has no atmosphere whatsoever, just way too big)

If we filled it it would be OK, but even with 50K there it seems empty

Your maths is a little bit out.

For us to get a home final (assuming we beat Brisbane, and I think we will), we need the results of at least two out of the following four matches to go our way:

      We need:-

Port to beat the Roos at the MCG (unlikely)
Freo to beat Collingwood at Subi (maybe)
Dogs to beat the Crows at AAMI (maybe)
Bombers to beat St. Kilda at the Dome (unlikely)

If all four matches go our way, we can still finish fourth. And we will pretty much know where we stand at the start of our match with the Lions next Saturday night.

may as well play on the gravel down at queenstown wont make a difference on current form.

If we did turn it all around and start winning it would be a boring season highlights dvd.
Theres not much left to say

Here's the changes we will make for the elimination final in two weeks.

            Out: Jack, Moore, Veszpremi.

            In: Mathews, Fosdike, Crouch.

We are better to finish 8th than 6th or 7th as by finishing 8th and if the impossible and ridiculous happened and we won the first week and kept winning then we would not meet Geelong until the GF. Won't happen I know but just being an optimist.

I think CS was talking about finishing 5th or 6th and getting a home Elim final? Not fourth.

We're eighth at the moment, so we need to overtake at least two other teams to finish sixth and hence get the home elimination final. Overtake 3, we finish 5th, overtake 4, we finish fourth.

                      Would rather play Geelong

36 months from a Granny, Sydney are in the 8, which is pretty remarkable seeing the player many rated as the most valuable a few years ago had an enforced holiday for 7-8 weeks, and busted his wrist, the Dual Brownlow medallist has played injured for a good proportion of the year, Crouch was out for ages, Buchanan got four, MOL has had to have 4-5, Kennelly quite a few outs, Eski injury time etc etc...
Sydney have every right to be down with WCE.

What I find amazing is that players who do a lot of the really physical stuff have remained injury free.... Jolly, Kirk, ROK, B1 and B2.
Sydney should be congratulated for being in the 8, there is no bout adout it.

This is a great point you have made. Our blokes deserve a lot of credit for the way they have handled themselves under trying circumstances, even Hally, who is still a great player

Collingwood in 2002 could be the role model for the optimist 2008 Swan supporter.

In that season, the Pies went all the way to the Grand Final, and only lost to the mighty Brisbane Lions by just 9 points, in the closest Grand Final in 13 years.

However, in the last 8 home and away games, Collingwood (with a dream draw) won just thrice, and lost 5 times to:

Round 15 Geelong (then ranked 8th)
Round 17 West Coast (then ranked 7th) )
Round 19 Hawthorn (then ranked 10th)
Round 20 Essendon (then ranked 10th)
Round 22 Western Bulldogs (then ranked 13th)

They also had a close 11 point Round 21 win over lowly ranked St Kilda (then ranked 15th )

Although unfortunately there are a couple of big differences between Collingwood 02 and Swans 08.
