Roos' Legacy?

There are many here who think that Roos is an unthinking ego on legs. Others see him as the messiah for the 2005 Premiership. Whatever, it's pretty clear that next year will be his last as the Swan's coach.

If you were Roos and planning this last year, how would you set it up? What players need to go, need to come, need to be rebuilt to AFL level? How about coaching staff? What coaching structure would you put in place? Do you tank for draft picks or can you rebuild the team with what's left and the twos?

Can we stay positive? If you are Roos you have just 12 months to get it right - and the structure you leave in place will be at least as much your legacy as the Premiership. (Unless you want to do a Mugabe and take the team down with you.)

I would be dissapointed if Roosy left a floundering/sinking ship at the end of next season (a la Gary Ayres at both clubs he coached). If Roosy really wants a challenge and to be known as a great coach in the next 5-6 years, he should try and rebuild the club with youngsters and smart trading for the second time. IMO, a great coach is one takes a team to flags again after rebuilding the previous once-great team with another great team ie. Sheedy in '93 after rebuilding the '84/'85 teams and then again in 2000 after rebuilding the '93 team.

If he does that, his legacy at the Swans will be legendary.

His legacy is already legendary ... he got us a premiership - therefore he's a premiership coach and will always be remembered as such.

I agree that Roos' delivery of a flag has secured his legacy. I think he truly loves the Swans and wouldn't want to coach anywhere else.

Having said that, I've never felt that he would be around for the long haul. Ironic really, that he is our longest serving coach.

I don't particularly think we're in for a 'rough patch' a la Carlton or West Coast. I think the Swans as a club are too smart for that. They understand the competitiveness of the Sydney market and know through experience how quickly support can drop off once you start to slide down the ladder.

We've got some good young players coming through. I think the problem, on field, is that we haven't got the correct balance of youth and experience. That'll improve as these guys like Vespremi and Bird and Jack and Barlow get more game time and hardness. Plus the fact that through injuries, we haven't been able to put a consistent 22 on the park each week, has hurt us a lot.

Overall he has been great, but...

I wouldn't be surprised to see him pull up stumps at the end of this year, 2009 at the latest.

His message is wearing thing, and his gameplan is nullified. He is out of answers right now.

I'd like to see him live in the States, do some media, meditation, etc... then come back for another crack in 3-5 years.

I think there's only a handful on here who think this and I've never spoken to anyone outside of RWO who does.

I third that. I also know of almost no-one outside RWO who pretends that Roos was ever seen as some kind of deity because he delivered a premiership, and therefore no-one who put him on such a high pedestal that his failure to deliver premierships from 2006-8 equates to abject failure.

I don't think that is necessarily correct. There are some here, myself included, who have criticised Roos, who have said that they found him arrogant, and who have questioned his decision making. Others have branded them Roos haters and reacted hysterically to those comments. On the other hand, there do seem to be plenty who consider that he delivered the premiership.

To be honest I would too, though I don't get the same vibe as you.

i think roos is an excellent man manager and could rebuild a "new" swans team. He would probably need a bit of a change around him to spark fresh ideas, but he is obviously a good coach and seems to get the players to play for him.

I also think he does a good job as the face of the club and gives us a reasonable marketing tool unlike some other coaches (not that it is that important) but if we are going to drop down the ladder a bit it cant hurt to have a coach with a bit of profile and admiration.

If roos did go he leaves as our only living premiership coach and i would think his place is secure in the club history, i also think it will be hard for the next coach to emerge from his shadow.

If he does leave as much as i like longmire i would prefer a complete change of direction and would like to see someone from the outside of the current coaching group step in.
