Cheer Cheer the Red and the Blight

Hooly Dooly, this article by Trevor Grant will no doubt provoke some discussions from Swan's and non Swan's fans alike.

When Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos declared that the team he moulded from scrappers to premiers had reached the end of the road, I could not shed a tear. In fact, I whispered "good riddance" when I heard the news.
Perhaps only Sydney supporters who valued, above all else, the 2005 premiership - the club's first in 72 years - could mourn the passing of this team that made it its weekly ambition to strangle the life out of the game.

The Swans played with a remorseless devotion to a whole range of cynical defensive tricks, and were lauded for their pluck, courage and unyielding adherence to team objectives.

So he reckons everyone except Swans supporters enjoyed the 2007 GF more than 05 and 06? I doubt it.

And I am so over the nonsense that Sydney are responsible for flooding. Even Geelong were doing it to us a week ago.

To be totally honest (and shoot me down if you must) I really did prefer to watch last years GF. Dont get me wrong - I loved the '05 granny because I was there and we won, but we came too close to losing it. In '06 they fart arsed around in the first half and decided to play in the second half but it was too little too late.

But I agree with this - our style of play really was this stop and start stuff, and strangled the life out of it - that isnt footy - it was becoming a little bit like a rugby maul without the scrums and with occassional glimpses of attack.

I have watched footy ever since I was a kid and I have seen it change so much in that time, and not necessarily for the better.

Of course the AFL have had a big hand in sanitising the game with their stupid rule changes, But the Swans took the game to a level that wasnt attractive to watch. I dont think I'm alone in saying either how frustrating watching our boys has been on far too many occassions.

To watch Geelong demolish Port last year was breathtaking, they never took their foot off the pedal - they could have done in the last quarter but they didnt. Mind you Port blew alot of hot air before the game - but they just made fools of themselves in the end, they had no answer for the Cats attack.. For me the constant stoppage stuff is annoying. But everyone is different.

thankfully it seems that our boys have realised (albeit a bit late in the day) that the game has changed, they are still getting used to it and eventually (you can always hope) they will get their @@@@ together and be back on top.

Thats not to say I dont love them or the club - I do I wouldnt be a member if I didnt, but I would much prefer to see a flast flowing and high scoring game.

Ah Trev, Murdoch lyricism at its best. "Pass like a kidney stone . . ." The fact that this arse clown couldn't write a note to his milko disqualifies this piece of Hun trash from any serious consideration. As GB Shaw once said about a review of his work. "Sir I have your review in front of me. Shortly it will be behind me."

In terms of excitement last year's GF was low on the radar, unless you were a Cats fan.
Didn't Roos go over to USA prior to becoming coach to pick up on how other teams approached winning and picked up the defensive tricks there?

As I said each to their own - but then I have a soft spot for Geelong. I guess they had waited a long time to get another premiership too - theirs came a tad easier than ours though on game day .

Yeah Roos did go to the US and picked up things from Gridiron (sure as hell wasnt basketball! ) still he has made changes and given the players greater powers, leadership skills etc, but the time has come to try something else - the rest of the comp have worked us out, and are beating us - so where too from here?

As if Roos invented the flood.
And I liked tempo football at its best - wait, then strike. Unfortunately, with the lack of skills and loss of urgency it has become wait, wait, then turn it over. We were really worth watching with the power of Hall, the guile of O'Loughlin, the urgency of Bolton J, the grit of Kirk, the run of Kennelly and the hair-raising antics of Barry. And now the era is ending.
Time for the next step, but I'm glad I was here to see that one.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

                            What a STUPID remark!

Does Trevor Grant seriously believe that the 2007 GF slaughter by Geelong over Port Adelaide was a BETTER grand final than the 2005 and 2006 thrillers!!!!!

Some of these Victorian journalist harbour the return of the all Saturday afternoon/all Victorian VFL competition.

                            STUPID!
