SCG planning on knocking down more stands

heard it on the 5am news this morning - the SCG trust are planning on more reno's. This time knocking down the MA Noble all around to the Dally Messenger - yet they are going to keep that god awful Bill O'Reillly stand! There is no guarantee either that the new stands will retain the same names.

INteresting too see how that pans out - will we be sent out to Homebush a bit more during construction???
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

Off the top of my head, they are safety hazards, they are not up to standard and the ground capacity is too small.

Considering that it was the 5am news they didnt go into chapter and verse about it - so I dont know. But the MAN & others are old, certainly aren't that well maintained and have a host of risk management issues due to their age. So to knock them down and start again is a good thing I think. I'm sure more will be announced during the day.

I wasn't questioning the quality of them (not that i really pay attention to that - my focus is more on the field) .... just why now when we've had diminished capacity all season and it's only going to get worse ...

i'm sure it's alll for the better but it just takes quite a while and changes the atmosphere of the ground when there's huge gaping holes ...

did you see the MCG development ?- it was all done in stages - it takes a couple of years - however as it has a greater capacity it wasnt affected as much as the SCG will be. I suppose its "better late than never" also - its not as if there isnt another ground that cant handle a large crowd - hence Homebush. Yes its inconvenient, but it will make the ground better in the long run. (and a hell of alot safer too - which for me is far more important) It should have been done years ago - but this is the cardigan wearing Rodney Cavallier and his cronnies at the trust calling the shots - they never make a decision with out years and years of lunches - er I mean consultations with various organisations.

It's how things are done. eg the MCG redevelopment took years and went around stand by stand. It's either that or do it all at once, but who is going to allow that to happen and miss out on 2-3 years revenus?

LOL "You know it makes sense!"

So, are they going to keep all of the old [members] stands? (I don't know the names of the stands at the SCG.) Pretty stupid if they are unless they are saving those for stage 3.

The cost of taking a stand can be high - National - smh.com.au

The trust's development application, submitted in May, says it hopes to complete the project before the start of the Ashes series in late 2010. But the spokesman said the timing of the project had yet to be finalised.

The Sydney Swans, who play most of their home games at the SCG, will lose seating capacity during the construction of the new facilities.

But the club's chief executive, Miles Baron-Hay, said he understood the development would not begin until after the 2010-11 Ashes series. "We have no confirmation that works will commence in 2009 and don't expect that they will," he said.

That article sort of answered my question. I am guessing that eventually the old tinderbox stands will go and the seating capacity will be 50,000.

It's about time they knocked down the Messenger stand. It's not even on the same angle as the others as it was built to face the sidelines for League. It's ugly and should have gone years ago.

Long overdue. I am not sure why they wouldn't knock over the O'Relly as well and have new stands running right around. Maybe that will happen one day.
