Swans can learn from Hawks - The Canberra Times

The Canberra Times, Australia - 7 hours ago
If that seems like the Swans will be having 50 cents each-way compared with the all-in ruthlessness of the Hawks, there are sound reasons why Sydney don't ...

The Hawks' strategy was basic and hardline - any player on the list that was not part of the projected premiership team (and, in 2005, there were only five "definites" and five "probables") was considered surplus to requirements. Sentiment was spared as the club used the trade table, the draft and the recycling bin to fill, position-by-position, the gaps in their real-life dream team.

Yes....come and play games at York Park (Aurora) instead of Homebush.

Comparing us to Hawthorn is like comparing apples to oranges. Human beings throw up too many variables to say there is one simplistic answer.

The fact they've had some very low draft picks has helped them substantially as well. People seem to forget the bottoming out bit.

It really is the biggest load of claptrap. No team has yet won a premiership by accumulating lots of top draft picks. The Hawks may yet become the first - though I'll be surprised if it is this year. And they did it in an era when the competition actively rewarded being deliberately crap for seasons on end. With the reduction in the priority pick system, not to mention the two new teams set to come into the competition, no team is going to be able to build even a premiership-challenging team in the next few years without judicious (and lucky) drafting with picks right throughout the spectrum.

          Agree with Liz.

There's no exact science. Would Geelong be as good as they are now without their father son selections? Probably not.

Just as Hawthorn probably probably wouldn't be genuine contenders now if Franklin fell into the hands of Richmond.

Imagine if they had picked 22-year-old Luke Franklin instead! Have just been reading 'The Draft' by Emma Quayle (was discussed over in the Patrick Veszpremi thread) and I had to laugh at the account of the Hawks drafting Buddy in 2005...they actually called out the wrong name first, luckily they corrected the error quickly, because under the draft rules, if you make a mistake when making your selection, you forfeit the pick!

Otherwise I agree with hammo and liz, 'The Draft' focuses extensively on Hawthorn, and while I give them credit for making some pretty ruthless assessments of their list 3-4 years ago when it was obvious they couldn't win a flag, I doubt they would have been as ruthless if the system hadn't rewarded 'bottoming out' to such an extent. It certainly wouldn't have been possible to fully implement their draft strategy without enough top picks. The clubs these days are generally pretty good at identifying the best talent at the pointy end of the draft (say, top 25), and priority picks have become an even bigger advantage as a result.

Well, they were made to look like geniuses when the guys they dumped (Rawlings, Hay, Thompson) all turned out to be crocks. The story may look different if they'd led North to a flag.

Considering we have been in finals for 6 years including 2 GF appearances with one Premiership it is yet to be proven that Hawthorn will be more successful than that from their drafting. Besides as others have said the Swans cannot afford to bottom out and languish on the bottom for several years it is better to limp into finals than do that.

At this stage, Hawthorn aren't anywhere near as successful as us. Not saying they won't be, but this article is a little premature.

No right or wrong way to go about winning a flag.

Not a bad idea. It's probably easier to access Aurora than Homebush for most Swans fans.
