    Flying High

Out of the blue, I got out the movie Flying High on dvd. Slap bang in the middle of the movie was the Swannies tune and at the end of the movie. I noticed in the credits that it was the theme song for the Notre Dame Grid Iron team. I checked out YouTube and found these.

Yep the Bloods in the all things good Yank craze of the 1950's, inspired by the 1940 film, 'Knute Rockne, All American' wrote to Notre Dame the university and asked permission to use the tune. Supporter Larry Spokes wrote the lyrics. Rockne is credited as the greatest coach in US football history, had an 88% win record and one of the most famous lines in sports film "Lets win one for the Gipper"(made infamous by the awful Ronnie Reagan) His best quote is It isn't necessary to see a good tackle. You can hear it. The tune is appropriate as Paul Roos is Knute Rockne

When I was an exchange student at Indiana in 1990 my next door neighbours in my dorm were big Notre Dame fans, and they used to blast the theme song every time ND would win a football game. So hearing the tune always brings out the happy memories of my time in the US, as well as the obvious joys of celebrating another Swannies win!

Speaking of Family Guy... The long awaited season 7 has started in the US.... Episodes 1 & 2 readily available in BT format... Not that I or this board condone the downloading of licensed material.

yes the swans song is from Notre dames the fighting Irish, also I think most of the AFL clubs have their clubs theme song "borrowed " from others. Hawthorns is actually..." I'm a yankee doodle dandee", fitzroy's now brisbanes is the french national anthem, Geelongs comes from sort of opera, I think carmen but I could be wrong, stkilda's song is fairly obvious, not sure of the other clubs but I am sure the theme for the crows is actually an american military theme for the Marines.

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

                        so that's it!!!

From the time I started following the swans during the 2003 season until now, whenever at a home game after a win watching the words to the song flash up on the screen I have always thought 'they're wrong!'
The words in the song don't match with the words on the board.

In fact it's only one word

"whether the odds be great or be small"

                        is actually

"what though the odds be great or be small"

and not the other variation I used to sing

"what will the odds be great or be small"

FINALLY i will know what to sing!

                        Let the silly season continue!
                        WE NEED CHEESE!!!

lol I didnt know it was in that movie, only random spot I ever see it is in a Simpsons repeat (Cant remember which one) where a marching band plays it
"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."
