    Taggers live on borrowed time

    Taggers live on borrowed time

I hope Roosy is working on a new game plan as we speak, otherwise I fear we will be cellar dwellers in the next few seasons if this means rule changes to cut back on taggers effectiveness.

However Geischen shows again how out of touch he is with reality
Umpires boss Jeff Gieschen has been pushing for some years to add an extra field umpire and has argued that a fourth field umpire would prove a deterrent to aggressive tagging, given the speed of play and the heavy workload now afforded umpires in the modern game.
Wasn't that why the third umpire was introduced?

On the other hand, this should mean that Bazza will kick 100 goals from free kicks (that is if they actually apply the proposed new rules).

I think of watching the American Pigskin on ESPN. There's nothing wrong with Gridiron, I quite like watching it, except for the undeniable fact that it takes 3 hours to play a 1 hour game. After every play the umpires (including the video) scrutinise the play to see if there was a foul while the coaches set for the next tactical move.
    It.

    Takes.

    So.

    LONG!

And that is all a 4th umpire is going to do in Australian Rules. Slow the game down, at first calling more free kicks and then simply getting in the way. But that's not my big gripe with this article.

The AFL also now looks certain to take on the controversial issue of rushed behinds, with the commission expected to approve a rule change in the NAB Cup, which again could be adopted in the home-and-away season. It is expected that a free-kick will be awarded to an opposition player from the position the ball was pushed through the goal posts or behind posts.
What sort of crazy-a##e gibberish is that?! Didn't we have the commision say not a month ago that they would not looking to radically alter the scoring? They obviously meant that doing it subtly so that the opposition can score 7 points instead of 1 was okay, but giving 3 points for a rushed was not. I'm fed up with the rule changing shenanigans they pull down there for no good reason. It's yet another example of an extreme reaction to some guy whinging about the rules.

After all, the same article cites the 4th field umpire as coming onto the radar after Worsfold had a whinge that taggers were ruining the game. Well here's a hot tip for you Johnny: You're the coach, so figure out a way to use it (or beat it) tactically!

I swear if they made me the head of the rules commision I'd just bang all the whingers heads together until they stopped bleating and started focussing on playing the game.

Once again, they should just leave the game alone, it's sanitary enough as it is.

      Soft.
      Soft.
      Soft.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

You'd never see the NBA or FIFA change rules willy nilly like the AFL does. Is it because it's just our game so we can mess with it all we like?

Might as well call it "Netball with kicking instead of throwing." It doesn't have much of a ring to it, but the way the rules are changed it's eventually going to happen.
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore

Leave the bloody rules alone! The players and coaches will work out a response, the rules committee is not needed for this supposed fine tuning. Better, apply the current rules consistently.

When are they going to introduce a rule to stop tackling? I mean, why should an opposition player be allowed to attack someone with the ball??And something needs to be done about spoiling. You can't have an opposition player knocking the ball away from someone trying to mark the ball. They also have to seriously do something about players "on the mark". Why are they allowed to jump and carry on while the player is having a shot at goal? They are distracting the player and he could miss.

Come on, change the rules, you zombies!!!

Could not agree more. I also think that all fields should be a uniform size, and rectangular. The introduction of an off-side rule would be of benefit and players should be allowed to throw the ball.

Here I was thinking Chow-Chicker's comments more resembled gaelic football or basketball. Of course, Australian Basketball is doing great at present
