Obstructed viewing areas in the Victor Trumper Stand

I checked out the new Victor Trumper Stand at the SCG today.

Be very careful if you opt for a platinum membership in this stand - how on earth the club can justify classifying Bay 310 as a platinum viewing area is beyond me.

From Rows P-Z, BB & AA, Seats 5-22, there is some element of obstruction caused by the O'Reilly Stand that gets progressively worse the higher you go. I would estimate you would see only 35-40% of the playing area in Seat 5, Row AA, right at the top of Bay 310. The obstruction extends to Rows BB & AA at the top of Bay 311 too. I would estimate about 220-230 seats are affected overall. I'd be spewing if I was asked to pay a premium price for those seats.

As far as the rest of the stand is concerned, there are some great viewing areas indeed, as long as you don't sit too close to the numerous entry and exit points. Again, I'd be spewing if I got a seat with views of the glass-and-rail barriers, and there's no shortage of those.

To top it off, the north-eastern tip of the O'Reilly Stand partially obstructs the new screen that sits atop the Messenger stand in just about everywhere except for Bays 317 and 318. The SCG staff present were also speculating as to how far back the sun will go into the stand, and I suppose no-one will know that until it's used for the first time.

Of course, the views from the corporate boxes are very nice indeed.

I think I'll stick to the Brewongle Stand and cop the price rise.

I went to the very top of the Grandstand. Herein, you have no vision at all of the Scoreboard on the Randwick end; whilst the Scoreboard on the Paddington end is greatly obscured by the roof of the O'Reilly Stand.

It's "Yabba" - aka Stephen Harold Gascoigne. Maybe PK next?

In case you've never heard of him Liz, he was a loud barracker at the cricket prior to the Second World War and used to sit on the hill (also known as Yabba's Hill and now the concourse of The Victor Trumper Stand).

Coincindently, Yabba and Trumper were born only a few weeks apart, and within the first year of Test Cricket. Yabba was born on 19th March 1878, and Trumper on 2nd November 1877.

So for the AFL representation we're not going to get Kelly, or Lockett or anyone of that ilk...but Kenny?

They were planning to...eventually. Though it probably won't happen for a while. Perhaps the Bradman/Noble/Messenger stands will be the first to go as they are the oldest, but even with those we'll be waiting a few years.

Went along to the Trumper stand open day, concur that there are some pretty good views from up there if you're not in the areas mentioned by Cheer Squad (to be fair the scoreboard above the Messenger isn't really in the best position to be seen for a majority of the ground).

Otherwise the seats are not too high up (certainly nothing like the nosebleed stands at ANZ - perhaps more comparable to Level 3 at the Dome?), I don't think the sun will be a problem in the stand, the roof extends further than any of the other stands, though the concourse will still get plenty of sun (same as the old Hill).

All in all I have to say the stand is a badly needed update to the SCG's facilities. The statue of Yabba was a nice touch. Would be very surprised if Kel isn't chosen for the AFL one.

We are safe in the Bradman/Noble Stands until 2011 - apparently there is an ashes series coming up and they can't do the job until after that. Not enough time. How do I know. Had a chat to a certain double barrelled surnamed Swans official today in the corporate area of the new stand. We chatted about lots of things, some comings and goings.

The Yabba statue is a gem.

Don't count on anything else, i.e, PK, it is after all the SCG, cricket. We are only tenants. Apparently.

Just had a thought. Imagine a statue of Kenny leaning over the boundary with two fingers pointed as a mirror to the seated statue of Yabba at the other end. Wouldn't that be great! The supporters comprehensively represented.

I took some photos which I've uploaded to Photobucket. It's been ages since I've used this facility. Here's the web address. Not sure if the hyperlink is working.

I'm informed that two AFL players are marked for statutes. My prediction is that in early June next year, Tony Lockett might get one. 6th June 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of his 1300th goal.
