    Goodes ready to be captain?

    He says he is.

If we continue with three captains he would seem the likely choice.

    Roos:
"I'm sure Adam will be absolutely ready to go if Leo or Brett decide to stand down at the end of (2008)," he said in February.

Who's in the leadership group now that Leo's stepped down? I count Kirk, B2, Goodes, Kennelly, Ablett, NOG. Who else? B1?

Who do we reckon should step up for the leadership group next year? Melcho? ROK? (Assuming they are not already in it.)

Aren't NOG and Ablett the same person?

B1 used to be but either stepped down or was dumped after 2007. ROK's already there.

Maybe the extra responsibility would be beneficial to him, i.e. no unwarranted brain snaps, no time for chicks, etc.

Can only be a good thing.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

There are a lot of Abletts about. Hard to keep track.

When I wrote that I was thinking about whether Ablett (or Noggie) would keep his place in the leadership group in 2009 after a pretty average 2008.

As Anthony Green would say, it will be one to watch in the Swans leadership election 2009.

The thought occurs: if we're going to have an election for the leadership group, let's do it Illinois style and knock off the debt while we're at it.

I bid $2 for Kirkie as sole captain. $50 to bring back Kelly. $150 if Bob Skilton pulls on the jumper again.

Goodes is not captain material. Leadership group, yes. Community ambassador or some such crap, absolutely. But as a player he is hot and cold, on and off, brilliant or average. He does not need the pressure and the team does not need a skipper that has weeks when he cannot get it right. He is a genuine superstar, but a captain he aint.

Great players don't always make good captains. That is also a basic fact in football knowledge. Often it is the solid battler that makes a better captain.

My personal hunch is that Goodes is the type of "confidence" player who would benefit from the title of "Captain." I think that for a two time Brownlow medallist to be told "you are Captain Material" would actually be a relief rather than a burden. Between the lines of some of his statements over the last few years is the cry "what's wrong with me?" and that this has affected his self confidence. I reckon he would become a more consistent and confident player if her were captain.

PS why is Adam Schneider still on the header??

I don't think Goodes in captaincy material based on his erratic behaviour in recent seasons. He gets in a weird headspace sometimes which is hardly what you need for a leader.

If he's deemed mature enough now then I hope it helps him take his game to a more consistent level.

If he's overlooked and gets down about it then it merely proves again he's not ready.
