    Perceptions

Last night, after Christmas shopping I flopped on the couch and decided to delete some recordings from the Foxtel IQ. The first thing I came across was the Swans-Freo game (R18?) this year. That was the one where Goodes kicked eight - and that was all we heard about afterwards.

This week I was reading here how players like Jude Bolton were unlikely to improve - and that's from what most regard as a low base. In the game I watched Jude did at least as much as Goodes to win us the game. Other impressive performances were Hall and Bevan. A lot of our talented kids were erratic or crap.

It's started me thinking about how perceptions. To most of Melbourne the Swans are a bunch of pensioners led by that thug Hall and that sniper Goodes. But there's just as much ignorance on here. Buchanan won us the Premiership as much as Nick Davis did but the threads on that would be 90:1. As Brownlow votes show Jude can be one of the Swans' best players but who dares say that here? Bevan can be the equal of Craig Bolton (and that's praise indeed).

Who do you think has an under- and over- inflated reputation amongst Swans fans?

In the Xmas card, they mention Jude as being instrumental in the game with 29 touches.

... don't forget the small, yet important thing he did at the 05 granny.

        Kick it to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

The Melbourne media can't stand Sydney ... but I think that's just more of a Sydney/Melbourne thing.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

I have to say I would be the first to bag Jude early in the season, but he definitely lifted when you guys really needed to win in the latter part of '09. As a consequence I have had to revisit my views on him - (as I prefer to slag him off as a Paddington try-hard selling motif T shirts rather than a decent footy player) - but from what I saw late in the season he played really well & got stuck in! If he can string a good pre-season together and keep that form into 2009 he will be invaluable for you guys.

Yep - remember those last few frantic moments. Luke kept the ball in play (as did Baz) and moving towards our goal square as both were pushed over the boundary. Then ROK had his own desperate attempt to get a shot on goal.

Another Jude moment - the last quarter of the 05 GF when Jude in a helmet was desperately running into goal only to be taken out by Judd as he kicked.

And the game Jude won with the last winning goal this year - and his pure joy (and our surprise).

The look on Amon's face when he kicked the winning goal in the GF.

He did, you're right. I have watched that quarter a number of times

Goodes frustrates me more than any other player on our list. Not sure if it's an over-inflated reputation or not but I don't rate him as highly as some other Swans fans.

All brownlow medalists have an over-inflated reputation - that's the nature of the game.

All the crap about "ex"-junkie cousins, the first thing they normally mention is "2005 brownlow medalist", "ex"-junkie cousins ... blah, blah, blah. As it does for all of them.

GS, most people on here that knocked JB for his 2 howler seasons of 2006 and 2007, me included, acknowledged that he had a much better season in 2008. I still can't forget his feature article where he admitted his preparation in 2007 was not up to scratch.

Yep Luke Ablett did work hard on that last Q of the 2005 SF, but has been, to be kind, ordinary since, when it could be reasonably expected that he would be an improver.

No doubt Buchanan's game in the 2005 GF was a pearler, particularly his desparate last Q and he has suffered from a nagging knee injury since.

Perceptions indeed can change from one game play to another. What we need in 2009 is far more consistency and not reliance on too few, and for those blokes who let others issues affect their game to put their head down and redeem themselves with good footy. It won't take too much with a fit squad to show a 10% turnaround.

It is amazing how on a forum like this peoples'perceptions of players are so varied, but that is what makes our game so topical.

Collingwood appoints Maxwell captain and immediately fans ring into SEN saying he is such a gutsy player, not too skilled but a trier and what better captain to set the example. Then the other school get stuck in saying; correct, no skills, no brains, no good and worst possible choice as captain. Don't you just love it.

Does anyone know where I can get an Adam Goodes blow up doll for P46 for Christmas. When he visits our joint on Chistmas Day he can kick it around the back yard to his heart's content.

I agree (apart from the T-shirt thing, I couldn't care less about that).

You want to see someting funny, have a look at Jude's first game against Carlton down at Optus. Like little whirlwind.

Having watched some of the really old games, the thing that gets me is how b... good some of the blokes were that I tended to malign. Warfy for instance, had some pearlers, so did Johnny Stevens, Luffy, Gerard Bennett, Boffa, and of course in amongst the rest of the best were Frosty, Nicksy, Bayes, and I had almost forgotton just how truly wonderful Kel was. Strangely enough my hero Stuey was not always wonderful; I had conveniently not noticed that.

Then again there is Scotty Russell......

Agreed - thelook on Monty's face when he kicked "that" goal is worth a portrait.
