Swans Team under Zoning not Draft

INteresting to saee what teams would look like under the old zone system and not under the draft.
Today the AFL site posted what the swans would look like...

If Judd went marching in ... - Official Website of the Australian Football League

    SYDNEY SWANS
B: Josh Gibson, Brent Staker, Scott Thornton
HB: Paul Bevan, Craig Bolton, Dean Solomon
C: Kieren Jack, Jarrad McVeigh, Tadhg Kennelly
HF: James Gwilt, Ashley Hansen, Craig Bird
F: Stephen Milne, Cameron Mooney, Adam Schneider
Ruck: Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Lenny Hayes, Mark McVeigh
Inter: Dylan Addison, Henry Playfair, Beau Dowler, Ryan Davis
The Swans draw on South Melbourne?s traditional zone as well as the majority of NSW (apart from a small area zoned to Geelong and North Melbourne.)

South Melbourne had access to players in part of inner-city Melbourne as well as north-east Victoria and a patch around the Oakleigh-Noble Park area. This section might only cover a few suburbs but it would provide the Swans with Scott Thornton, Stephen Milne, Ashley Hansen, James Gwilt and Beau Dowler. The final side is quite impressive and would definitely be a competitive outfit.

Interesting side, but clearly lacking any ruck ability and a backman with a glass jaw....lol

Good to see Schneider back in the colours and Staker lining up at full-back. No hard feelings eh?

No Kirk...he's from Albury, no? Who's zone was that? And Leo Barry didn't make selection.

Kirk is in North's zone and Leo is in Geelong's zone and made theirs.

Most of the NSW border towns down around the Murray River play in the Victorian Country Football League and therefore under the old zones those towns and their clubs where considered part of the Victorian Zone System because of the Leagues they played in because that would of left the zone system open to abuse hence why part of Southern NSW was zoned to VFL clubs.

Basically if a NSW club played in a Victorian Country League that club was subject to that League's zone more or less.
            Once was, now elsewhere

We look alright, I'll give it that, but some teams get absolutely shafted by the zoning. Look at Melbourne and Richmond in particular, while all the interstate teams get a massive advantage from much larger pickings.

For the record, here are the other teams:
              Adelaide, Brisbane Carlton Collingwood
              Essendon Fremantle Geelong Hawthorn
              Melbourne North Melbourne Port Richmond
St Kilda Sydney Western Bulldogs West Coast

What I think is a particularly good sign is that 26 current Swans players (including Fosdike) were listed in this exercise, which I think shows a good senior list for us in 2009 with enough depth to cope with a couple of hurdles as well as giving some young guns their chance to prove they can make it. For those who care, the following players made it onto a team list under this fantasy exercise:

              Martin Mattner (Ade)
              Nic Fosdike (Ade)
              Jared Crouch (Ade)
              Amon Buchanan (Bris)
              Patrick Vespremi (Coll)
              Nick Malceski (Ess)
              Ryan O?Keefe (Ess)
              Adam Goodes (Ess)
              Jude Bolton (Ess)
              Leo Barry (Gee)
              Luke Ablett (Haw)
              Jarred Moore (Haw)
              Brett Kirk (Nth Melb)
              Barry Hall (Nth Melb)
              Michael O?Loughlin (Port)
              Matthew Laidlaw (Rich)
              Ted Richards (StK)
              Darren Jolly (StK)
              Paul Bevan (Syd)
              Craig Bolton (Syd)
              Kieren Jack (Syd)
              Jarrad McVeigh (Syd)
              Tadhg Kennelly (Syd)
              Craig Bird (Syd)
              Lewis Roberts-Thomson (Syd)
              Henry Playfair (Syd)

The upside is that we get LRT and the Bevanator either way.

It's a pretty ordinary team really. Aside from the ruck issues, almost all the top end quality in the current side is lost - Hall, O'Loughlin, Kirk, Goodes, O'Keefe, Malceski, Barry (notwithstanding the fact that several of those players are close to the end). The only players of comparable quality introduced into the team are Hayes and McVeigh. And maybe Mooney on his very good days.

And very much like the teams we did have from the zone.

Mind you they have already gone due to a Shaw being in the red and white.
