    Roos on Fox News c513

For those at home, I just saw on FoxSports news that Roosy will be a special guest on the midday edition of FoxSports news today to discuss the Swans and the upcoming season.

      Nothing startling.....

      1. Still expects the 'aging' list to perform but if we are struggling from the mid-year, expect to see a look to the future by getting games into the youngsters.

      2. No hard feelings towards Tadhg at all. Always knew he would go home eventually and his injuries were really impacting on his game and just moved the date forward when he returned home to fulfill a promise he made to his late father.

      3. Leo will come back via the seconds in Rd 3 or 4.

      4. MOL touch and go for Rd 1. Ankle problems are fully fixed, not expected to be a problem at all, just a lack of a fitness base may work against him.

      5. Expect a strong side to play the NAB Challenge in the next 2 weeks with less rotations off the bench to simulate the season proper.

      6. Rushed behind rule is just way too grey an area ATM and should not be considered for the season proper.

      As I said......nothing startling

As you say - just a quiet little dig at the AFL rules committee ...
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Thanks for passing that on 3B.

Roos doing an interview anywhere is pretty startling.

I'm surprised they didn't ask him anything about 'ugly footy', which seems to be topic of the week. And Roos invented it, right?

Interesting comments from Matthew Knights: "You won't see much man-on-man play" - which is very much the Swans style.

            Knights said:
"I have been to a number of games live this year and in some of the games the teams didn't pick up a man for the whole day. It was just a 16 or 18-man zone.

But "Shock" it's defensive zoning, not flooding, which because it was invented by Hawthorn makes it legitimate. Clarkson is seen as a genius by the Melbourne press, but Roos was lambasted by the likes of Walls and we were just a group of no name players who played scrappy defensive footy, and got lucky in 2005 to win a flag.

Careful Roosy, you don't want to be investigated again by the big bad AFL.

Ugly footy via the flood or zoning has been on my mind ever since Wallace won that game for Footscray against Essendon nine or so years ago.

There are a couple of ways to fix it, the obvious or the scientific: The obvious one is to ban or restrict interchange. That rolling zone is only practical if there are 18 blokes on the field with the legs and lungs to carry it out. The scientific way is to kit all players with GPS and give an immediate free from 10 metres out if either team has more than say 15 on either side of half way or 10 inside either 50. Reckon I will go with the obvious.

Mind, I don't hear too many Hawks fans complaining, just as I was not complaining in '05.

True ORB on its origins. And I'll admit that we were playing ugly in the first part of 2005 - we were playing a travesty of the game plan and we were butchering the ball and losing matches. It wasn't just other footy fans who were complaining, WE were complaining. When the players started implementing the plan as it was intended, we won much more often than not, and it was exciting to watch. Even others said so, notably in the GF when although the footy didn't reach great heights of skill, it was seat-gripping gut-turning thrilling. With a few tweaks, e.g. a bit more run and carry, it's still a good approach.

Totally agree. It's the Swans' skill errors and poor decision-making that makes them hard to watch - and not just in 2005.

I thought it was significant in the interview with Knights that he doesn't actually criticise zone footy. He's just saying "it's coming". It's usually it's the commercial managers (who deal with sponsors) and the pundits who fret about these things.

Part of the fun of following footy is seeing how teams evolve to deal with tactics of the day. I hope they don't spoil this with stupid new rules.

Same could be said of any team tho', Hawks vs Lions last year in Tassie was a swan-beating shocker for worst game ever.
