Swans official site has White not Pyke as the goalscorer (even if their maths is abysmal)

              hope for rd1

there is hope for round 1 as the saints played poorly also today. they managed 2 goals to half time and 9 for the match. power easily beat them and let them score a few at the end when the game was dead and buried. sounds similar to tonights result.

I think we can take the saints at home if we stay disciplined and dont stuff around with it -we have a habit of doing this against the saints.

good to see baz scoring well for a couple of weeks now.

we really need the win in round 1 as i am worried that if we dont, we could easily be 3 - 4 losses by end of round 5.

              train hard boys, train hard!

                After tonight's showing, that's apt.

We got smashed in the midfield. Hall kicked his four on a part-time defender. The final flurry of goals after the best players had left the field.

The Swans had much less to enthuse about, their unchanged game style broken down comfortably, though not for the first time in recent seasons, by the well-drilled Crows, before they regained some too-late ground by tucking away the final three goals of the night.

Huge concern in a pre-season match to see our (short) best player list comprised exclusively of old heads. Now is/was the time for the young up-and-comers to shine and demand a spot.

Okay, just 7000 in Adelaide means no RWOers were likely to be there, but if anyone saw it on pay TV or whatever, would love to hear about the performance of young and marginal players.

EDIT: Only just looked at the team list. Scarily close to our round 1 line up; very few marginal players to speak of. Not a good result at all vs a Crows side which was fundamentally strong, but still had more freewheeling youth than us.

Big deal! The game was over by then.

It's the same old story against the Crows. Our predictable game plan - committed, man-on-man - broke down comfortably once again against Adelaide's zone-up style of play.

What worries me is that as we introduce new members to the team they're basically being conditioned to fail against the Crows repeatedly. It's not as if the Crows are world-beaters, because they're not. We just make them look good, and it's so frustrating.

If we don't do something about the way we play the Crows, we may as well not bother to show up for Round 13, and let them win by default. There'd be more in it for us to have the week off than suffer another humiliating defeat.

Went to the game at Visy and watched the Port game and just reading the info on the other games and the 2 things that are of concern to me for the 09season are as follows.

1 : Our Kids : Simply dont look like they have improved .
Not one has shown anything of substance in all 4 games maybe apart from Jesse White.Every year when you see all the players again someone or a few look bigger or have a couple of ripper practice matches.
In the 4 games I cant think of one kid that has a blinder or even a couple of solid games apart from White. Daniel Currie is a way off from senior footy at the moment,Mike Pyke, whist is a good story, we a kidding right now that he will play.Hes a long ,long a way from playing AFL Senor Footy as he needs time to play the other stuff in Canberra. Daniel Okeefe is well a GUMBY. I cant believe he went so high in that draft. Hasnt got any bigger ,looks to small and simply cant get a kick. Just watching Collingwood last night and 2 kids come straight to mind : Beams & Sidebottom have both had impacts against good opposition in better football games .Our old heads seem to of been our best players every weekend. The same old heads.

Also we have played 3 games with close to full strength sides against weaker opposition.Melbourne had a heap out, Doggies had 5 or 6 of their best and the Crows had a very young side and we kicked goals against kids in the last quarter when the game was gone. Hally atm is simply our only forward. Remember Bulldogs final from last year.

2 : Slow Midfield : Whilst I think they have done a great job and still do a great job , we will be exposed on the bigger grounds and smart midfields.
Geelong would have a party against our midfield, like they do against many others, though they would show us up big time.
Apart from Jarred McVeigh whos not that quick we are so so slow and have no pace at all. Our pace is in the back half with Shaw. Its of real concern as the game still is won in here and we just dont have the right artilery to compete against the best any more especially on bigger grounds where they can make space and run.
Really hope that Kirky can have another good one, Jude backs up last year, Noggy finally delivers, Birdy improves and they stay injury free.

Still , I have hope that we will be around the mark and these kids will get better as the year gets on. Just hope its quick and that they may not quite be ready at the moment.

Ross blamed our general work rate for the loss and downplayed the impact of the zone. It might be credible if this was just an occasional loss to Adelaide but it's not - there's no way 10 losses out of 11 starts to the same club over a decade can all be put down to poor work rate. It's got to be something about the way they play against us.

I was at the game. Matt O'Dwyer only given a short run in the last quarter. can't judge him on not many minutes. Birdy did a few good things. Worked hard won a bit of the ball. Pike got on after half time for Jolly, and should be expected to take time to develop. He spent a fair amount of time on the ground after half time. White wasn't given a lot of time as Jolly did much of the work in the first half, Pike much in the second half. Seemed to show a bit of form and decent work-rate. Could be a handy forward too. Veszpremi looked a little slow on occasions but showed some flair and promise. He reminds me a little of Nick Davis in his potential. Barlow worked hard and had a few handy disposals and strong hands. Grundy also had good hands, just needed to present a bit more. It might just be me but he seems to be moved around a bit. It would be nice to see him settled in one position to find his niche (not everyone is a Lauri Nash who can be swapped from CHB to CHF on a whim an dominate at both ends!). Shaw got off to a solid start but seemed to be a little quiet later in the match. Moore worked solidly.

We didn't win but there were some positives to be taken out of it.

That's true. For all of the positives to be taken out of a good senior experience for the younger players, the Crows side wasn't their best.

It was a pre-season match and played without the intensity required of a competition match. Psychologically and physically players don't give it their all. As for our record against Adelaide in the last decade it simply indicates they have had very strong and very physical sides over that decade that have matched us in physical strength in particular. Nothing to do with game plans, zones or other cliches used by a mediocre Adelaide tosser who can't add up.
