Wait for it. Wait for it.

    Too late!!

Saints got it out most times before the Goal umpire had even started waving his little flag.

I can hardly think of a time when the ball came back quickly to the full back in time to kick off quickly. Most times it went over the fence and the Saints had already blocked up their forward 50.

When they had a set shot you could see their players moving into their kickout positions before the ball was kicked for goal. Yet we didn't man up or get into position when it was our turn, and it was frustrating to see St Kilda just waltz out of our backline from kick ins for that reason rather than the quick kick in.

I have more of a problem with our forwards not backing themselves from 50 metres with a set shot.
Or at least putting into the hotspot, rather than chipping it around.

Yep, kick-ins have been a weakness for years. Well not really a weakness, but something we haven't really tried to make use of as an offensive weapon. I suppose the main thing is not to turn it over...

I doubt our players know what "top of the square means". They never put it there and it seems a game plan to not kick it quickly to our forwards one out.
Mind you I would rather Buchanan had passed instead of trying to kick a goal in the last Q. That kick was, well best described as ...shouse.

Or hear the pitter patter, of the tackler behind him (1st Qtr).
Seems to happen to him a lot.

We just look completely unsure and the pressure just mounts on us when we can't find a target or the end result is a throw in on our defensive 50.

I always groan when we have Mattner or even Malceski now using up all 15 seconds of our time without a clue where to really kick it to.

So does anyone see any strategy in our kick ins at all?!! Honestly?!
Our kick-outs have gotten on my goat as well to be honest. How often do we either opt to play on & only succeed to play a team-mate into pressure as a result. Or we have everyone split either way from straight in front meaning that the first lead we take is nearly always NEVER straight down the guts or long.

I know our game is aimed at using the wide SCG where we often use the extra space on the flanks & wings to get outside the opposition's defensive net. But half the time you'd think the goals were on centre wing with the amount of wide kicking we do. Is Roos scared of having us commit to a contest? Is our SCG policy actually useful anywhere away from the SCG at all? Does our kick-out play-on policy actually not work? And does it place undo stress on defenders who have enough to do & are under-manned as it is?

Too many questions about what we do up back. Especially when you see teams play the same tactic every week to stop our handball-happy build ups out of defensive, it gets a bit tiring after a while. Are we serious One Tricky Ponies with the type of football we play?

                Fix the kick-ins

We've been griping about this for a long time (I was surprised no other thread popped up when I put in the title), but we don't have to miss Tadhg; others can do it e.g. any of Shaw, Malceski (who is well and truly back in town after Saturday's effort) or Mattner. Let whichever of them is nearest grab the ball and kick as soon as the ump points his/her finger. It would have to be the easiest-to-fix weak point in our game.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Nothings changed, it was the same when Tadhg was here. They simply don't utilise the quick kick-in.

                  Why?

                  I'm as baffled as anybody.
