What saturday night proved more so than a need for a different game plan is that if they implement it correctly (al la first quarter) it works, if they panic and dont stick to it (al la second and third quarters) it doesnt. In those situations you can have a hundred game plans but if they arent going to be followed then they wont work. The same equally applies to St Kilda. They didnt probably change there "game plan " too much in the second and third quarters, they just actually implemented it as was intended.

During a game I think you can tweak things (eg move someone onto a player doing a lot of damage ) but a game plan is something ingrained in the players from months of training. I dont think its as easy as saying to a group of players lets now go to our "zone" plan or our 'where getting the crap kicked out of us" plan.

According to the commentators (even as far back as the prelim final against geelong in 05 ) the solution to all our problems when we go thru a bad spell is to either :
    1. Throw Barry Hall in the ruck
    2. Put kenneally in the midfield.

being that we cant now do 2 , then surely plan B is very simple, THROW BARRY IN THE RUCK - Cmon Roos even if it just shuts Walls up for five minutes it would be worth it.
An insightful post - I don't think most clubs have multiple game plans, the coaches just make positional moves to create uneven match ups or negate opponents

Oh well - we just now have to wait and see - perhaps the Hawks will all get the bad prawn sandwich on the plane and we beat em- you never never know!!!
It's called match promotion. They are trying to persuade people to come and watch the game. I am struggling to understand why anyone would have an issue with our coach and captain trying to talk up the game.

I don't think the majority of people on here think we should have multiple game plans, but, that when things aren't going right there should ba a plan B. That is, do exactly what you were saying about moving a player or 2, when you are getting beaten badly, then you have to do something to change it. Unfortunately Roos (as much as I admire him) seems to not be willing to do that.

Well aware of that Liz, doesnt meant that we all have to agree with it. I would have thought that the coach would be talking up his own team thats all.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

And if he were doing that, no doubt there would be people on here complaining that he was deluding himself and deceiving us by suggesting we had a smidgeon of a chance against the Hawks.

Actually Goodes has been talking up both the excitement and quality of Buddy and the Hawks and his confidence in his own team to match them. But why let facts get in the way of an opportunity to have a whinge.

and Michael Hurley injured himself at training this week and is out of the Essendon side this week. Has played one AFL match and is already braking down at training in the tradition Essendon style. So there is nothing wrong in holding back on Lewis Johnstone until he can stand up to playing 4 quarters of Senior AFL for a regular period of time. At the moment, regardless of his form in the reserves he hasn't proved he is ready to go at the AFL Level. Because I rather get 10 plus years out of a player than, go for a quick hit and see him brakedown and he leaves the game after only 5 years without producing what was expected.

One Reserves game doesn't prove he is ready.

Magoo makes a valid point, one of the very few valid points in this thread relting to game plans...

you dont change it if the players aren't putting in..you cannot tell me that it was roosy'sw game plan on sat night...the players went to sleep, totally6 stopped doing what they had done in the 1st qtr...

As far as the kids go..simply if they are in form age or not and your seniors aren't..when you bahve bnothing to lose and really we ahve nothing to lose this year...you give them game time especially when they are in a crap comp..

this east coast league needs to ahppen next year to strengthen the northern states comp and skill level to rival the vfl, wafl and sanfl.. hell even include some tassie teams and strong 2nd teir VFL teams

                                Meredith did OK.
                                White was great.
                                and Grundy just keeps improving.
