I thought he played lamely as a forward at the beginning when it counts.
He was not doing the "Hall/Oloughin" running to space in front to grab it.
He was not doing pack mark. He was not doing ride-on mark.
He wasted his opportunity to show that he can contribute more to the goal scoring when it counts mosts.

When the team got going, he showed some signs later.

Maybe, you saw more of him than me and you are justified in your statement.

Disgree. "Hail the messiah" in jest - ok, that's simple one liner.
Luck was with us yesterday V Blue.
We should never depend on luck. It is best we make our own luck.

In the first quarter where a team can often dictate the course of the other three quarters, the blue inaccuracy at goal kicking let us off the hook big time. Had they kicked straight in 1st quarter, with us down by 5 goals from their dominant "into 50m", compared to us, 3 to 1 ratio?, the score would have caused panc in our team and coaches, and we would be playing catch-up footy the whole afternoon, as we have done so often in the past. More often, we lose too in catch-up footy and leave us "feeling sad" the next day.

With Halls absence, quite a few times now, we seem to abe to develop effective multi approach to goals within just one game. It makes us unpredictable for opponents and negate their best defender, usually effective against our one-demension attack with Hall, with their backup defender front & back tactic. And, often in the past, when Hall returns, we return to one dimension Hall attack, throwing away the invaluable effective unpredictable multi-dimension attack. Why?
Unpredictable approach to goals have been mentioned by seasoned commentators here, as a smart play/big plus over the years and proven again last night.

Is it the constant "intimidating arms-protesting" Hall to fellow-players that is hampering the multi-dimension attack, epecially if the ball is not kicked to him?? Of course, the ball should be kicked to him if he has empty acres in front, with one-on-one or running to empty space AND he is seen to be winning & getting golas. But if it clear that that the opponent front & back tactic is effective in shutting him down 2-3x in sucessions, then this multi-dimension attack should be rigorously persued, and players in the fields instructed to do so. Hall is used as a decoy to draw at least 2 best opponents away from our main multi-targets.

You can see the "extra kick" in each player after they score thier goal. Their enthsiastic running back to center square or their position in a display of their adrenaline pumping that extra bit for that few seconds and minutes. This can contibute to the extra 1 percenter from there-on, as the recent ride-on Goodes mark at goal square does to lift a team.

There is great room for multi-dimension attack in each game. Smart coaches will use this major tactic.

      Mini-screen
And why the small note-book screen at half break break to give quick instruction to players. This was displayed on tv. Surely, today Swan can afford a 106cm LCD/plasma, costing probably $1000 for a used one, placed on a custom made high stand, and it is connected to the note-book. The The coach use a hand-held laser pointer onto the screen to get the message across clearly. We should have this large screen setup in every place we play. If other coaches are not using more high-tech tools, our greater use would add that 1% advantage.
Undertsand your comments re the fact Carlton missed a lot of opportunities but to put it down to luck isn't fair either. The final score was 12-12-84 Vs 9-13-67. i.e. We still had more scoring shots than them. At the end of the day, the team with the most scoring shots generally wins. Accuracy works itself out over the entire duration of the game. To focus on one quarter is narrow vision. Afterall, We kicked 5-10 in the second half compared to their 6-1 so we could be arguing that the Swans missed their opportunities to really put them away!!

With one major difference - Grundy can kick.

Maybe when Leo is set to return we should play him on a half forward flank.

Back to the future! That failed though. His value was his dash off half back but Shaw has since assumed that role

I thought Barlow looked much better against Carlton. He was committing his body to contests far more, and actually using his considerable frame to advantage. He backed himself, and was looking a lot more comfortable. Obviously I agree with your statement, but I thought he showed a lot of improvement on Saturday. Perhaps the playing group has taken him aside for a quiet word or two.

Agree. Early on, I was thinking my usual "Barlows got no confidence and looks soft" type thoughts. I dont know what he was thinking when he passed backwards to the carlton player BUT as the game went on he seemed to start getting into the game more and hopefully may have turned the corner.

nah I reckon get back to basics - a fuzzy felt board (with Footy field drawing on it) and the little animals representing the players, quarter and half time oranges in the tupperware container and a wooden spoon to clip players across the ear when they have a bad quarter. Its harsh, but in these times of GFC its cheap and effective!

AGree. He was a lot better, took that mark and goal on quarter-time and looked a lot more confident than against LIons. I can see why we persist in him but he has to learn to cop the hard stuff.

I tell you what is cheaper and you dont need to pay the $1 made-in-china wooden spoon.

Roos just do the Gibb NCIS thing - clip the ear or back of the bad quarter player(s) head with the palm of his hand. You get instant growl and full attention, instead bad-quarter-player(s) dreaming of happy hours beer time, post match.

Top NCIS show too if you haven't seen. Channel 10 & Fox.

High tech tools gives the perception of professional Swan outfit, probable envy of opponent players but more importantly, it may play in their mind of our coaching ingenuity/control. Opponents would wonder what we are up to and may feel 0.5% less assured.

Great tech tools to give maximum output in minimum time - thats what you want in the urgency of game time and breaks.
