The Rugby next door actually helped the crowd IMO.

A sure barometer of a healthy crowd is when the bottom deck of the actual Members Stand starts to fill up and yesterday it was pretty full.

There were a group of 6 guys sitting in front of us in the Noble, 5 of whom were watching there first live game. They were dedicated Rugby types who took the opportunity to do the double header Swans/Waratahs. I'm sure there were many more like them.

That's an interesting point. We'll have to see how big the crowd is when we play Richmond to make a comparison.

I also think the crowd was helped by the sheer number of Carlton supporters in attendance - there were a lot. They probably thought there was a good chance they would break their drought against us.

The amount of empty corporate boxes is a real concern I thought.

The empty ones seemed to be mainly in the new stand, though. I'm not sure they'd be too concerned if they were yet to fill all of the new ones yet as it looks to have added another 20 (give or take) to the total number.

30,834 people showed up for today's game at the SCG, the first since the kerfuffle over the membership package changes. It's the biggest crowd at the SCG since Round 14, 2003, when 31,121 turned up to watch us play the Eagles.

I thought we'd get a bigger crowd with the increased seating capacity, so it was a bit disappointing. I noticed there seemed to be quite a few gaps in the Brewongle Stand.

I also noticed there were a lot of Carlton supporters in the new Victor Trumper stand, judging from the size of the roar whenever the Blues kicked a goal.

I suppose we'll get an idea of how many Swans members sit in the Victor Trumper stand when we play a team with a small support base in Sydney. Round 9 against Port Adelaide comes to mind.

That is a very good crowd for the Swans. Its 30,0000 I mean c'mon thats good for the SCG. Hawthorn - Port got 30,000 , Brisbane - Collingwood got 34,0000 , and I don't wanna look at the Fremantle - St Kilda game. I'm happy with that crowd. The only reason why some people bag us for our low crowds was based on ONE final against the Kangas. Everything besides that was pretty good and we were getting healthy crowds.

I thought we would have gotten a bigger crowd for two reasons - the chance for people to check out the new stand at the SCG, and the fact there was genuine anticipation about the game against Carlton.

I was looking forward to seeing a crowd of at least mid-30s, so the actual number was less than I was hoping for - especially as there were so many Carlton supporters in attendance.

As a Melbourne based Swans member it amazes me how many Swans supporters are still looking for seats a 1/4 time. What is it?

I think the Trumper stand makes the crowd feel bigger and gives the SCG an even better atmosphere.

The numbers were down around bays 29 and 28.
I guess some may have moved to the Trumper and then there's the ones that did not renew.

Nob le Stand was pretty squeezy but mostly with Swans members, and a scattering of SCGers. Probably I think because of the cost of tickets elsewhere. Hilarious watching people arriving ten minutes before the game and looking bewildered because all the seats in the "good" area had reserved stickers on them.

The ground takes a while to fill up because for instance the greatly mooted Hills bus arrives - if on time, yeah get real - only 30 minutes before the game starts, and there were huge traffic holdups everywhere, so it was a mad scramble. Transport to games starts late, parking is limited, so punters arrive late.

One great thing though everyone! The mostly red caps are back, and they make a huge difference from a visual point of view. Huge amount of us Reds. The white caps look incipid, so yay to be back in the red.

We arrived at half time (escaped from a wedding between ceremony and reception) and were surprised at how busy all the members enclosures were.

Was a great afternoon, atmosphere, sun shining, great footy.,. and we won! Love games at the SCG.

Only issue we had was the great queue for beer. Obviously more people are going to drink on a Saturday, they should have been a bit more prepared.

I had thought the same thing. The SCG looked pretty full, way more than I have seen for a while on the TV, I was surprised when they said the crowd was just over 30,000, it looked a lot more.

Had great afternoon, the Ladies was FULL, and I was able to educate 'new' supporters around me about the importance of the 'evil eye/chewy on your boot' chants to the opposition Maybe it didn't look good on TV, but the atmosphere was really good.

NB : No junior AFL played middle week of school holidays (like many codes)

... so I would be careful scheduling Saturday arvo games ... but it was a great day had by all ... even the Carlton fans seemed OK!

Interesting to see the NRL did well with their Cronulla game in Adelaide ... 8,000 (translates to about 3,000 paying customers)

I reckon considering all the limited parking, traffic congestion and various events in the area, 30,000 was a pretty good crowd number.

Agreed 30,000 was fantastic even if I was hoping for 35,000. Consider the other sporting events crowds on Saturday and we should be very happy with the turnout.

AFL yuppies trump racing's great day

I JUST cannot understand some people. Only 18,130 were at Randwick on Saturday to watch the mighty Takeover Target while just 800 metres away at the SCG 30,834 turned up to watch a run-of-the-mill Aussie rules clash between the Swans and Carlton.

I'm not bagging the AFL, good luck to their yuppie supporters, but at Randwick it was history, it was something you will be telling your grandkids about.

I think Kenny Callender may have had a few too many sherbets to come out with that - but then again I'm sure If I were to have grandkids (which is a bit tricky seeing as I dont have kids!) I would have great pleasure in telling them the historic race I saw (via the big screan at the Tamworth Services club) -"our horse" True Pearl ran third At Echuca in 1992 - one of the most amazing days of my life!!
