Ryan O'Keefe - Injured, disinterested or other???

What's up with ROK? I'd hate to say his heart just isn't in it anymore but that's what it looks like. He's having no influence on the game and seriously looking like he's just making up the numbers. Channel 7's footy show on Sunday morning even made comment on it so it's just not me.

I don't want to bag the guy as he has been a stellar performer for us in years gone by but he's looking terrible at the moment. Is it all in his head or is there something else there???

Apparently, because of the injured players in our forward line(not playing), he is not able to play his usual role. He is just being played in the forward line. He's a great player and we all know he can play 'tall', but he is not going to take every mark that comes his way. He will get beaten by quality backmen from time to time if he is just camped in the forward 50. If he is allowed to run his 'backman' opponent around the ground all day, you will see him back to his usual best.

He's certaing not disinterested. At the after-match do he got asked a couple of tough questions regarding that specifically and his response left you in no doubt that he is totally committed but as Johnno has said above - his role is changed.
Let's get Hall and MOL back and fit before you pass judgement.

How about, just out of form?

Still looks to be working hard and is probably being played slightly to close to goal at present due to other forward injuries to use his greatest asset, running capacity.

All players go through these patches when despite still busting a gut they just can't produce. Have a look at Harvey from the Kanga's until this weekend.

Who played on him Saturday? He was shut down pretty well.
Captain, I am detecting large quantities of win in this sector

ROK is going along pretty well considering the circumstances. His performance against Carlton was solid and quoting footy's most popular phrase these days, he is "doing his role" for the team.

It is a no brainer for opposition coaches at the moment as to who in the forward line to attempt to shut down, which makes it pretty difficult for Ryan. Particularly on Saturday against Carlton - with no Hall, MOL, Davis to draw the best defenders - pretty much all of the forward line of the past few years has been turned on its head. Even allowing for that, ROK worked his way into the game pretty well after being blanketed, and was a pretty solid contributor by the end.

As far as motivation goes, no one can blame any player for wanting to be close to family, but when that didn't eventuate it is pretty obvious that Ryan has shown (as always) what a very sensible and mature young man he is. He has obviously had some disappointment to work through, but he has lots of credit in the bank and he deserves to be believed when he says his commitment is 100%. Anyone who uses his recent on field efforts to question him is drawing a pretty long bow and should show a bit more respect to a player who has been a huge part of the club's success in recent years.

Couldn't agree more with this post. At the function I was at, Leo Barry said that the omission of Hall has ramifications for all the positions right down to the back men, but I can't help but agree that Ryan would probably be affected the most. We do get a bit hasty in criticising our players (I also have been guilty of this), and couldn't help but reflect on how I would feel if I had the media + fans + coaches criticising my work, it is bad enough having to do a performance review for one person. I myself have been guilty of criticising Barlow until I had a look and realised he has actually only played 13 senior games.

Ok, so no Hall was this weeks excuse, what's the reason for the other three weeks?

Must say I'm a bit surprised at how many think that he had a bad game. Certainly has had a slow start to the season but on the weekend I think he did a great job of working his way into the game - 15 touches at least, laid a few tackles.

Made good position to mark at one point in third term, but the pass was ordinary and I think his poise in gathering the footy and dishing off (pretty sure it resulted in a McVeigh goal) was the O'Keefe of old.

Definately will be easier for him when the other forwards are back, but the guy deserves credit for turning his own form around on Saturday.

I must have been watching a different game. I thought he did ok in what was a solid team effort.

Thought his second half was really good on the weekend.

Be patient, the guy is a star.

No, he is not injured. Or not very much. As far as we know.
                              No, he is not uninterested.
He is, as SF1972 said, playing his role in the team. His turn to shine will come, as it always has done. Settle down.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
