Best ad for AFL in Sydney ever (perhaps)

Peter Fitzsimmons, former Wallaby (momentarilly) and long time critic of AFL was at the ANZAC day match - you probably saw him on the tele. This is from today's Fitz Files in the SMH:
FINALLY, I think I get it. For many years TFF viewed Aussie rules as the rough combination of an upturned bowl of spaghetti and the fall of Saigon, and couldn't quite understand what all the fuss was about and just why Melburnians were so tediously crazy about it to the exclusion of all else. Having attended the Anzac Day Essendon-Collingwood match at the MCG, however, I take it all back. What a game! What an atmosphere! What movement of the ball! What a "result!" Like the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the two teams galloped from end to end for 2? hours, with no quarter asked or given, and the entire tide of play kept switching in an instant on a single mistake or individual act of brilliance. With just five minutes remaining in the game, Collingwood were ahead by 14 points, only to see Essendon snap off two quick, devastating goals to close the gap to two points. With 30 seconds to go, a Bomber had the ball right in front of the Collingwood goal, only to blow it, with the ball skewing off the side of his boot, and yet still Essendon weren't done! With five second left, David Zaharakis kicked the ball from 40 metres out, and as it sailed in the direction of the posts, 92,000 people held their breaths. GOOOOOOOOAAAAL!

I remember when the Waratahs used to play with that kind of spirit. I think.

        LMFAO
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

Couldn't believe this from Pete. I have been emailing him for years about the Swans and sometimes he writes about something I have told him. He actually responds to emails btw! I am going to have to fire off something to him soon. Something along the lines of How Dare He Go To A Collingwood Game! etc etc etc. Or perhaps, Toldya the Game Was A Beaut!

I loved reading that this morning. I really like Fitz, I went to a debate between him and his wife (Today Show Co Host, Lisa Wilkinson) a few years back and it was extremely good.

Agree ROK, very very good ad for AFL in Sydney.

He is a clever writer who knows that teasing people increases readership. He has been a torturer of the Round Ball Code for years & is hated by people all forums all over the place. Because they are so insecure about their place in the world & bite.

But he is actually not as one-eyed a rugger fan as you think. As shown by comments like the above. And how he begrudgingly admitted the World Cup in Germany in 2006 had "won him over", being there live & experiencing it all live.

Just a shame his local team don't normal provide the thrills that teams like Carlton & Essendon often do.
