    Pyke in the ruck

Is it just me or what is the story with bringing in Pyke at the age of 24 and teaching him the game and teaching him to Ruck. He looked lost yesterday.

We seem to bring in a lot of athletes and then are ball skills are crap.
He is not a footballer, they dont have footballers brains or instinct.

2-3 kicks of the football in 2 games, how can you expect us to compete.

Cant get my head around that
He will never have a football brain, this is where the swans struggle.

How long will it take for him, i reckon 4 plus years?

There must be players in Australia that have been playing AFL in the ruck since early teens

    In the VFL, WAFL etc.......

Pyke cost us nothing and has been brilliant with his tapwork. He is a rare athlete, with fantastic work ethic and the professionalism required to play sport at an elite level (having played international rugby for Canada). He has already come this far in 6 months, in another 6 months he will probably be completely comfortable at this level.

I really don't get what there is to complain about. We didn't have a backup ruckman with the body to compete at AFL level. Now we do. He hasn't been brilliant, but he's been alright.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

Quality rucks are not as common as some people think. The swans have been well blessed for a numb er of years in having good rucks in Ball, Jolly and Everett for a while. They also take time to develop partly due to the physical nature of their contests. We have 2/3 young ones in the system but Pyke's ruck work is fine and he has taken two strong contested marks in his two games. He's raw and his kicking will never be top notch but he is providing
Jolly with valuable recouping time and he's hardly getting smashed in the ruck, one bad kick to fb yesterday that was lucky to be held.

No complaints with Pyke so far.

Case in point: Prior to Jolly and Ball, who was a great long-term ruckman for Sydney? Stafford had his moments, Doyle was always injured, Ironmonger moved back to Victoria, and you're left going back to Barry Round to find a stable, worthy ruckman in the Red and White.

            Well written

Stafford took a long time to bring up to standard, he was not an overnight success but he was pretty effective for a few years.

Before that we had Brett Rose - a tryer but never got it, Brad Tunbridge - part of the dark years and he never worked hard enough - Paul Bryce, enough said and Ironmonger had a day or 2 and had some real shockers.

It is a bit similar to me coaching girls in my netball teams who have crossed over from basketball. They take a while to adapt and give away a lot of "contact" and "obstruction" at first . However because they re fit and have the basic skills of catching and throwing and good sports brains they adapt quite quickly.

I must admit they never get that Princess look about them that long term netballers have.

So it is not like going from Rugby to soccer. Pyke is more like going from basketball to netball.

                          Or the Chambers "experiment"?

I honestly don't know why anyone would be complaining about what Pyke has delivered just two games into his career. I reckon his composure in traffic has been reasonably impressive and his few mistakes have been no more of a liability than the mutiltude from far more seasoned team mates.

he has only played two games, from what I have seen he has done very well, should stay in the side.

AFL was taken from Gaelic Football, running game with ball in hand, running off the ball. Running with the ball, finding space etc....
Your a fool if u cant see that and again amatuers from Ireland beat Australia
