Probably the best combination of top ups I have seen at a home game this year.
They all pretty much held their own against good oponents, and I think this gave the listed players more confidence to play their own games.
Turned out a great game of footy, and that guy DID play on!...fair result though, I guess.
Unfortunately (?) not much chance of anyone pressuring the firsts this week, after the demolition job they did on Port!Comment

With LRT injured and Bird out with concussion why not give Currie and Laidlaw a try next week.Comment

My thoughts:
Laidlaw had a sensational first quarter playing off the HBF. After that he plateaued to a good solid performance and another set shot goal from 55m out (like against Q'bean) shows what a good long shot for goal he is. Not in the bests list.......they are kidding
Smith was his usual self, in and under gaining clearances and spent a good part of the day keeping Aaron Bruce VERY quiet.
Thornton was great. Took some great grabs under pressure and showed he is a ready made backup for the seniors.
MOD was TERRIBLE for the first three quarters. His turnovers were costly and plentiful. To his credit he had a terrific last quarter and was one of the main reasons we plucked a draw.
Brabazon was OK, but his disposal yet again let him down.
Cheese just lopes around and was the same Cheese which so often frustrates us.
I labelled DOK a dud 2 years ago and unfortunately he still shows nothing to suggest I will be eating humble pie, even though I'd be more than happy to digest one.
As 'unconfuseme' stated, the topups all held their own today, very little costly fumbling and a few actually showed a bit as mentioned by Ugg.
As also mentioned by 'unconfuseme' that guy DID play on, or at the very least ran off the line in an attempt to play on. Twas a very tough call on the young fella.Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

Wouldn't mind seeing Laidlaw get a chance but if Bird isn't right (and given Meredith didn't play much today) I suspect it would be Thornton or Bird who got the nod ahead of Laidlaw.Comment

I enjoyed this game. I thought the supps were making the most of their opportunities. I enjoyed Pykes rucking, especially knocking one down to his own boot and kicking it 30-40 meters (in the right direction), the blokes who have played seniors didn't forget they had done so, Thornton, Laidlaw et al, except Cheese. He has few supporters up in the Noble Stand and he has b rought it on himself. Shame.
there was a mention I think from Liz that the game didn't have any real intensity. I think the kids were exhausted. They were way ahead in the first quarter, ahead in the second, and got reigned in, overtaken, fought back, stayed level. It was the fightback that I appreciated. No going into shells, except the kid in 23 jumper who did a couple of "non" things and took to dropping his head. Never Drop Your Head! He finally did kick a goal and the head went up.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

It would be nice if we could get that team list BEFORE the game.....with numbers.
At halftime they put the squads up on the big screen, but there is never enough time to jot down all the top ups names.
Maybe I should email the Swans and ask them to be more considerate
Nah, as if they care. What was I thinking Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

They usually put up the names at full time, but not yesterday sigh.
I got a few numbers down:
23. Carey
47. Brackin
51. Karafilis
52. Penfold
53. Turco
54. DaviesComment

Hells bells, its a family trait!. Head down when things go wrong for you, and if the rumours are right number 23 is a Carey, and that's what Pumpkin head used to do. And mutter. If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

Prim, I think u are being way too harsh on young Carey.
I thought as a top up player he was real good. I didn't notice the head drop, but it may of been a case of him being disappointed in himself after providing a lot more than the normal top ups provide.
We christened him 'Teddy Jnr' (a shame his name didn't turn out to be Kennedy) because with his sox pulled up style and short fair/reddish hair he looked like a young skinny Ted Richards.

The article says he is 22 years old (in 2008), which is much older than most of the other top ups.Comment

Good find Ugg.
And you are right, he is much older which explains his more composed look on the field. He has a very slender frame for a 22yo. I guess it shows how much weight and strength based training players do at AFL level compared to amateurs and lower levels.
And u have to admit, he does look like Teddy, even moreso on the field with his hooped sox pulled way up.Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment
