I thought I had seen everything.....

But now the maggots are putting out their own "swap" cards.

Footy fans can collect umpire cards

This is exactly what Jeff Kennett was talking about when he said that umpires were becoming bigger than the game. IMO it is time they took their mikes and their numbers off them, learnt the actual rules of the game and started umpiring properly.

The only use for the numbers is that we know which idiot to abuse. Similarly the only uses for the cards are to throw darts at, burn or in case I run out of toilet paper.

He said sets were not marketed to the public because they were not something that they would want to buy. Asked whether he expected Thomas to buy a set, Deller said: "Maybe he might use them on the dartboard but, if he is mellowing a bit, he might want to start a collection."

Grant Thomas said the cards showed umpires' egos were out of control.

"As I said, they should put their egos in their lockers at the start of their careers and pick them up at the end," Thomas said. "And I can't get fined $20,000 (like he did in 2005) for saying that."

Far out, I've been looking for a collage idea for my old dart board.

Where can I get these cards in NSW?

Now, who's head for bulls eye.

Also, photographic images are used in all sorts of religious/superstitious practices for curses and spells and such directed against offending persons ... erm, just saying. In case any RWOs are voodoo priests or priestesses.

Not only their own cards, but they have a song as well!

          Has the world gone nuts?

Everyone's favourites McLaren and Chamberlain (Ray "The Razor" Chamberlain, according to the site) are two of the "current umpiring greats" to contribute vocals (Matthew James is the third).

Bigger than the game these days - you bet!

Am a bit worried about Saturday - neither of these two tools featured in the first half of the split round - so there's a good chance we'll cop one or the other (god forbid, both).

Maggots are just failed AFL players. Too short - too slow - no skills. That's why they take it out on the blokes who did make it.

They so think they're bigger than the game.

I checked my interpretations of the rule book. They're not.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

Just don't draw moustaches and glasses on them or the AFL will sue you for destruction of intellectual property ...
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

This is probably not going to be popular (hehe) BUT... I have a mate at work who umpires and when talking about this the other day we agreed that it (the umpire-bashing) is one of the few unfortunate things about our game as they have a job to do and much of the whinging about umpiring is an indictment of the rule changes/interpretations coming from the AFL anyway. We might not agree with their decisions but they're still there to officiate and deserve our respect.

That said, I have no time for officials who think that they are bigger than the game, and I think the world's gone nuts when umpires have their own collector cards and THEME SONGS?! Seriously?! By doing this they are likely to attract even more derision for being tools!!

If ego is going to play a big part in the modern AFL umpire I would suggest that they take it to the extreme. They could mould themselves into more interesting characters that would suite thier personality's, e.g. Dracula, , Hannibal Lecter, the Joker, Freddy Krueger, Dick dasterdly and so on.

I think Scott McLaren would make a great Dr Evil.

Now I'm picturing them doing their odd little umpire jog in glittery boots and flowing capes flying behind them. An image I need to scrub from my brain, methinks.
