At the risk of saying something slightly controversial - i think he is at risk of becoming luke ablett-esque - he has a real tendency to throw the ball on the boot and hope it goes somewhere where there are swans.

perhaps that is better than the 12th handpass backwards to a teammate but not much better.

But don't you often hear the cry (especially on here) of "get it forward quickly"?

If you can do that, before the opposition has managed to flood back, you give your forwards a chance to contest one on one. And if they're any good, you back them to win a decent number of contests.

Go back and watch the second half of the Roos EF from last year. There were two major reasons why we wrenched control of that game in the second half. One was the manic clearance work of Brett Kirk. The other was the number of times ROK took a contested mark (usually one-on-one, not in a pack) just forward of midfield, played on immediately and gave Hall a chance to contest one-out with his opponent. Beat the slow methodical build-up they'd been trying in the first half, where the damp conditions didn't suit trying to pinpoint passes.

And ROK has a pretty penetrating foot on him - so he is a good designated long kicker. At some point it just has to be up to the forwards to be good enough to capitalise.

but (and i accept it is something of a big but) i don't have any problem with him kicking it quickly after taking a mark at half forward flank. the forward line is open and he can motor to the drop of the ball as well as anyone (indeed another example of this was davis's 2nd or 3rd goal in the semi v geelong which occurred because o-'keefe sent one forward to an open forward line)

but i do have a problem with him putting it on the boot when he is on the defensive side of a pack and he is kicking it to where he would be playing if he wasn't playing on the ball.

there were times on sat night where he kicked it where we were outnumbered 5 or 6 to 2 - one of whom was moore (who is a pretty reasonable one-on-one marker but is hopeless at keeping a ball in if it hits the deck)

I was one, and after a really tardy start he has been back at his brilliant best, though comfortable with where my thoughts were at the time.
His committment had every right to be looked at and questioned .Your right though Plugger his form in the last 3 weeks is back to its best and he is answering all his critics perfectly right now.
Lets hope his good form can translate into us winning some footy games.

While I certainly agree with the sentiments of the OP, I thought he was one of our main offenders in terms of mis-use of the footy on Sat night.

He wasn't the lone ranger if he was one making errors in poor delivery into the forward line. The first half especially was atrocious and this has been a bit of a theme, I would agree tho that the idea of getting the ball forward quickly with that long penetrating left boot, is a bloody good one, we just need to have the forward structure to capitalise on it. Right now, and against Pies, did anyone notice Hall and Mick up the ground far too much or was this just part of the rotations? I'm going to say it again, get the young talls in there and put them down the spine, forget this year as a finals year, get the kids out there playing, not the midgets, the talls, and get some game time into them. Next year or 2011 we will have a team to beat again.

In his defence, when you get 41 touches, you're bound to get some wrong.
