I don't think we have any choice but to pursue this model as no club will be trading high picks this year. And even if we did, the sorts of players we would need to trade would be unpalatable to most supporters - C.Bolton, Goodes, Jolly etc.

Highly unlikely with Hanneberry but they did do a similar thing with Dangerfield over at Adelaide so maybe during the holidays. Meredith, Johnston, Currie, Pyke, Murphy, Veszpa, etc are all the future so I don't think we need to be so down. People r saying that our young talent r rubbish but of the players we have played nothing has really been expected of them. Braba was expected to have an average game, Barlow hasn't been able to rediscover his past form, etc. We need to start playing our real talents, like the names above. I hope we drop a few of the oldies, and give some of the younger guys a go next week.

Adelaide's recent draft history is not too dissimilar to our own, but in any case it makes no difference to reality.

Why? Because as Hammo said, and others have implied, no club will be trading for draft picks (National, Pre-Season, or Rookie) this year. End of story.

You slipped that one in there! I think that's optimism rather than real potential. Currie is the one we need to bring on as a priority.

I wouldnt classify any of the as high draft picks they have recruited smart and given young players game time to develop.
We on the other hand havnt given our young players much time playing seniors and our first rounf picks from the last 3 years DOK, Vez and Johston have all had injuries. My point is that we will now give these young players time to develop in the seniors while hopefully still winning games and they will improve.

I'll be surprised if Hannebury played this year but I don't think it would be that daft an idea. He's fairly strongly built - not a Moore, Bird or even a Vez but certainly not a Smith or Gilly either. There were reports of him coming in the top handful in the 3km time trials during the pre-season so it sounds like he already has a good endurance base. And a couple of games this year would give him some idea of the pace of senior footy and maybe spur on his pre-season.

However, Roos is pretty strong on players' education and I suspect he'd steer away from anything that would disrupt his final year of school.

In terms of whether Roos will keep his promise, we went into today's game with 4 players under 10 games of experience, another two under 20 and another 3 under 50. Not sure there is much more he can be expected to do. Don't think anyone would argue with CBolts and Macca coming back into the team as soon as they are available but thus far he has resisted the temptation to bring Ablett in. Will have to wait and see what he does with Monty and Eski over the next few weeks.

But we have picked up some pretty handy players with those trades Mattner and Shaw were both in the best today. If a second round pick turned out to be as good as Mattner i think the club would be pretty happy.

Very few teams have two good ruckmen. Not now. Not ever. We don't need, or expect, Pyke to start challenging Dean Cox for a place in the AA side. We don't even need him to take over the number one ruck mantle at the Swans from Jolly. Doesn't mean he can't make a decent contribution as a back-up to Jolly and then Currie.

And FWIW, his marking and kicking skills already don't shape up badly compared to those of many ruckmen regularly playing senior footy. His main weakness is still knowing where to go on the ground but that's hardly a surprise.

Where at, definitely not at the press conference. He seems to be happy with the mix of the 6-8 players he mentioned as young and if anything, seems reluctant to bring on anymore.

You get the feeling some people here just have the boot ready, waiting to kick Roos at any opportunity.

Basically all our fit kids played today, Meredith would definitely be in the side if fit and I think even Johnston would have been given a game. Aside from Hannebury, the "best" kids have been getting a run and we need to give them time.

I'll do my best to rate the kids so far

Bird: Can go missing, but he's cemented himself in the starting 22 and looks very promising most of the time.

Meredith: Oozes class imo, his disposal will only get better and his body stronger. Think we're on a winner with this one.

White: Let's remember he's a KPP, they don't become stars in their first 2-3 years, so give him time. When he's finally settled into one position, hopefully up forward, he'll only get better.

Jack: Solid without being amazing, but can do some brilliant things. No doubt he'll keep getting a game and he should.

Veszpremi: First game back in 2009 so it's hard to judge, but once he gets a few games under his belt this year he'll improve and start playing with the excitement that he did last season.

Barlow: We must stick with him, through the good times and the very bad! He has the skills and that natural ability to get the ball, if we let him go he'll shine at another club.

Thornton: Has looked poised and shown strong hands, but probably not confident in himself at the moment. I'd like to see him on the wing sometimes, just running and linking plays so he's involved.

Smith & Brabazon: Haven't seen enough to judge. Someone can help me with these two if they wish.
