Sydney Swans Reserves v Ainslie
5th July 2009
9.50 am @ SCG
Ladder
3rd) Ainslie 6 wins 5 losses 1 draw
5th) Swans 3 wins 8 losses 1 draw
It is crunch time for the Swans, for they are battling Queanbeyan, currently 2 points ahead, for the 4th and last spot in the Top 4. They must win their home games considering how their very poor form playing in Canberra.
Form
Ainslie have had an up and down time of it lately. They managed to lose to cellar dwellars Tuggeranong 3 rounds ago, yet bounced back to beat top side Eastlake the week after and followed it up with a 10 point win over Queanbeyan
A tough run of 4 consecutive away games resulted in 1 win and 3 losses. This included a disappointing loss to Tuggeranong, followed by a crucial win over Queanbeyan but reverted back to from with pastings by Belconnen and Eastlake.

OUT
9. Nick Malceski (Senior promotion)
10. Dan Currie (foot injury)
Scholarship players - Nathan Gordon and Ryan Bottin-Noonan played in the last round. Now that his NSW/ACT U18 duties are complete, I'd expect RBN to play the remainder of the games. Looks like Jay Lewis has been named as well.
6 topups have been named.
Prediction
The loss of Currie is a big blow, given he has been playing mainly at CHF/FF and providing a much needed marking target. However this has been offset by the return of White who should take Currie's spot up forward. (barring late changes to the senior side).
The midfield of Ablett, Buchanan (possibly), Schmidt, Moore and Hannebery will form a solid base in the centre. In the reserves games this year, White has hardly been used in the ruck but will probably rotate through that position due to Currie's absence, sharing duties with Pyke and Orreal. Murphy will take on Ainslie's star CHF Ben Hughes, but is going to need some assistance given the lack of defensive options in the side. O'Keefe started the year playing back but as evidenced by his return of 9 goals in the last 3 weeks looks to have been moved forward. Malceski played in defence last week but obviously is not playing in this game. Perhaps Thornton and/or MOD will have a spell down back due to the packed midfield.
I'll hopefully be posting some updates from the game tomorrow so stay tuned! -
Thanks ugg - great summary.
Any idea of where Murphy stands? Seems his confidence has been hit a bit with his injuries...I had high hopes he'd get a game in the seniors this year, any chance? The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.Comment

The following day I met with one of the reserve coaches to look at my tape form the weekend before and both of us were pretty pleased.
He told me just to keep going the way I am and I should get my chance ? it?s all about form from here on in and hopefully I can get that right sooner rather than later.
Haven't seen him play since his comeback from injury, will be keeping a close eye tomorrow.Comment

Swans 5.6 36
Ainslie 1.2 8
Goals: White 2 Gilchrist bell Ablett
White causing havoc up forward. Had another two set shots that he missed and IMHO is being manhandled by his opponent. DOK working very hard off halfback, Thornton using it well in fact ball use across the board has been excellent. Buchanan dominating as expected while strangely Ablett is playing up forward. Defence hasn't really been tested due to great pressure in the midfield
PS one of the topups is a dead ringer for Jason BallComment

Goals: White 3 Ablett 2 wicken 2 Gilchrist Buchanan
Goals that quarter: Buchanan White Ablett Wicken
swans 9.13 67
ainslie 3.5 23
White had 1.3 (including 2posters) that quarter being the major beneficiary of some great delivery and a sluggish opponent. MOD copped two late hits but really impressed me with his efforts and courage. Murphy loves running with the ball but his ball use is average and also probably gives his opponent too much room. Abletts kicking is still very much a mixed bag even at this levelComment

No surprise there - the Ablett kicking style is throw it on the boot and hope it goes to a teammate - can't remember the last time he looked like he was actually intentionally targetting a particular teammate to pass to by foot.
I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Goals that quarter: Thornton Martin White White White
White finally kicked straight but again the delivery was on a platter. Thornton was very vocal out there and backed it up with a couple of nice passes. Moore did a lot of the grunt work inside while Hannebery has been clever with his ball use. Schmidt has amazing hands fires out the handballs at great speed. Gilchrist doing well from the back half as wellComment
