Life Without Hally

I'm not interested in becoming embroiled in this whole Hally saga. Besides my emotions are way too mixed. While it's all very sad the way it has played out I suppose it's not altogether unexpected either. I'm trying to be rational about it all.

Can we cope without the big bloke prowling around in the forward 50? What do the stats say? Not quite what I'd expected them to say.

During his career at the Swans Baz missed 20 games through either injury or suspension. Of those 20 games we won 11, drew 1 and lost 8.

These games were evenly split - 10 at home (including nominal away games played at the SCG) and 10 away. An 80% win-loss record at home and a 35% record away. There have been 8 games at the SCG (we lost 2 of these) and 2 games at Homebush, both of which we won.

So it looks as though we cope pretty well at home and have been able to cover for Hally's absence, though it's been a different story on the road. However had we beaten North last year (and some believe we did) it wouldn't look too bad away either. Of course there are a lot of variables amongst all of this, but Hally's absence shouldn't lead to panic. Though combined with the loss of Micky O at the start of next season... who knows? A state of panic could well be justified.

I didn't like what I saw against North - very little thought and just bombing the ball forward.

While he was out of the side last year, we were lucky that we played struggling teams. O'Loughlin was also playing solid footy.

Would've been nice to to see him go on and help White and Johnston's development next year but life goes on.

We werent in a position to challenge, with or without him this year and probably next year even less so.

My major concern is that we employ stop gap measures like using ted or LRT, rather than looking to develop someone in the role, even if that someone is say grundy or white. Looking at his stats you would think that both have the height and the weight. I thought our forward structure was pretty unimpressive on Sunday and will fall apart against better teams.

It didn't really matter if we were going to challenge or not for the flag. But yes, it just would've been easier to nurture the younger forwards into the fold. Imagine a Scarlett/Rutten/Glass V Johnston/White next year. I doubt we'll have enough goals in us to beat the stronger teams as we'll rely heavily on multiple goal scorers. Its worked for the Dogs so far, but they easily have the skill to back it up - we don't atm.

Also, I do prefer Grundy in the forward line, but for the first time he surprisingly looked quite comfortable in defence.

The only truly effective full forward we developed ourselves since 1984 was Capper.

Maybe time to go shopping again?

Yeah, but he didn't top the Clubs goal kicking until 84.

MOL, Luff were not imports.

True, but if you read my original post I said many not all. Magic is clearly an exception and Luffy was often played as a defender and never in his wildest dreams topped the goal kicking. Nor was he ever considered a full forward.

Ahh, yes, I thought of both of them before posting but neither of them topped the goal kicking, but we did try and import a full forward in those instances too. Well, not Davis Snr, he came out of retirement to help out T-shirt Tommy.

Looking forward to seeing White, Johnstone and possibly Murphy all given plenty of time to play as KP forwards over the next 18 months.

Hopefully Butcher falls to postion 8 to 11, but he will probably snapped up by Melbourne at 2 as speculator KP pick after they take Scully with 1.

This is very true, though I think Toohey was used in a stop gap role. One brief exception was Shane Fell who played the one season before returning to Tasmania where he felt the opportunities were better (!!??). There has definitely been a pattern here though.

Further, it has also occurred with our ruckmen of late (since Staff) - Spida, Jolly, Ball.

Another thing I've noticed is who wears the #2 guernsey - Shaw, Davis, McRae, Williams, Schwass - all from other clubs. Struggling to think who the last 'home-grown' #2 was??

What does it all mean? Who knows.

Although I do see White, Currie and Johnston rotating at CHF and FF next year..with cameos from Goodes and Jolly
