I was thinking that he was probably stuffed from the week before against North.

He's an ex test-level Rugby Union forward -- he knows how to tackle I'm with you GS -- seeing him lay someone flat with a textbook, front-on rib-tickler would be a beautiful thing.

And pace? He scored a length-of-the-field intercept try against the All Blacks FFS. He's unbelievably quick for someone of his size.

I think he's concentrating on what he's out there to do which is the fundamentals of ruck-work. But I'm seriously excited by this prospect, and can't wait to see him bring the rest of his abilities into the game.
To all those people who waited 72 years to see a South Melbourne/Sydney Swans premiership HERE IT IS!!

On a related note, what is it with Bomber fans and k2k. I got this close to getting into a fight with one lunatic who stole my kids footy @ Homebush a few years back and on Sat. one idiot tears on to the ground and tackles me round my midriff and then tears off faster than I can catch him Dead set knuckleheads.

If that is the yardstick to use, I think we can cut him a bit of slack at having his first flat game since September 2006. A game in between where he has struggled doesn't spring to mind easily (of course there must be some) - which is a testament to what a great player he is for us.

I think the bombers game was just pancake day for us - they were all flat and off their games. They're entitled to do a Freo/Richmond once in a while ( we need to be thankful it is so rare as to be remarkable!)

If that was Chambers playing today he would have got the biggest roasting of all time. Unfortunately for Mike he has a long way to go down a very long tunnel with no light at the end. Over the off season they should give this bloke a footy to carry with him, he should be doing 100's of laps bouncing the ball and shooting at a handball target for hours on end. They should also draw him diagrams and for hours on end have him running to positions.

To have him in the side because he is tall and can tap the ball is pure folly.

Yes, but at the moment he's moving at record pace. He was rather ordinary today (though at the game didn't seem nearly as bad as people are saying), but you only have to look at how far he has come since that NAB Cup match against Port to see that there's a fair bit of hope yet.

And the unfortunate fact is that with Currie injured and Orreal a beanpole (and not much more experienced in the game than Pyke anyway), we don't have any other options. LRT is not a ruckman, we need him in defence, especially with Ted injured. Those saying that it's ridiculous Pyke is in the side, come up with better solution.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

Struggled yesterday but we may as well keep playing him. Not fair on Jolly to ruck all day and we want White forward, so Pyke has to play.

                        Agree Plugger.

OT: Jolly surely has the 2nd ruck spot sewn up for AA?

Should be a certainty IMO. I think the award's a bit of a joke, given who selects the team but they generally reward guys who have had a couple of quality seasons in a row. Sandilands will be the number 1 ruck - only McIntosh and a surging Clark could possibly challenge Jolls for the 2nd spot.

The 'feelgood squad' will back this guy, but he is very unlilkely to make it as an AFL footballer.

Unlike the rugby codes, Australian football is 3-dimensional and requires every skill in the book... and most importantly a football brian which you mainly develop in junior football.

The only chance for Pyke IMO is as a brut forward leading out of the goalsquare on a straight line. He can competently tap to advantage so could do some forward 50 ruckwork, and would be good at defensive pressure as well.

Unfortunately Roos' slow 'chip and wait for uncontested option' style gameplan does not suit forwards though.

                            Not much hope IMO.

Maybe not but that's the easy call.

Certainly worth persevering with I reckon and has to play at the moment for team balance.

Yep, he's there now and the ruck stocks are low, so give him a run.
Would be very disappointing if Currie doesn't take the 2nd ruck spot next year though.
