NSW/ACT Rams captain Dylan McNeil will be playing as a toppie, probably with a view to a NSW rookie listing next year. Let's hope no other scouts are watching as the Bulldogs did with Dylan Addison a few years ago.Comment

Schmdt's injury was not serious and will play is what I heard. Yeah we need to get Mcneil on a scholarship. Some reckon a top 20 draft pick. If we get him it will be a bargain. Use our second pick on him. Murphy needs to have another good game to give himself a good chance of playing next week.Comment

McNeil is not eligible for a scholarship, otherwise he would have undoubtedly been snapped up by now.Comment

Team list here:

It has Pyke and Bevan (who obviously won't play) listed but no Eski. Must have been a late withdrawal today. Even if we assume that Malceski doesn't play, we will have 14 listed players + 3 scholarship players (Gordon, Bottin-Noonan and May) + the aforementioned McNeil which amounts to a very strong lineup.
Ainslie smashed Tuggeranong today which means they are 2 games clear of us at the moment. This is your classic "8 pointer" with Queanbeyan just 2 points behind.Comment

I would assume that all 16 clubs would be able to have a crack at him, before we could possibly rookie if he got through.

If we could rookie NSW players before the main draft, we would effectively have priority over every (non-scholarshipped) NSW lad. The only players a club can take out of the main draft before it starts and put on their rookie list are their NSW scholarships, and even then, only if the player concerned agrees to forgo his chance of being put on a senior list and agrees to the rookie spot.Comment

So, to clarify, after the main draft we can rookie some NSW kids (up to 3 in past years) and take them out of the rookie draft before the rookie draft begins....capeche? They get listed (and read out) as our last 3 rookie drafts. Last year was very confusing because we didn't take any NSW rookies even though there were at least two who most observers rated (One was Bruest who was rookied by the premiers).
Brisbane has been able to do the same with Qld players."I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment

Yes I believe that is right but with the added proviso that the player agrees. I think there was the case of Matthew Suckling who we wanted to rookie as a NSW player but Hawthorn got into his ear and told him they would pick him up so he decided to chance his arm with them instead. As for why we didn't pick up any this year, you would have to assume it was salary cap issues, we also had a chance to re-draft Aaron Bruce but passed on him.Comment

Couldn't have been salary cap issues as rookies don't count in the salary cap. Might have been bank balance issues. Might have been because they didn't rate any of the NSW guys, though if it were that, I am still shaking my head that Bruce didn't another year. They clearly thought he was close to worthy, given that he was training with them up to the rookie draft.
Scholarship scheme, and then the introduction of WS18 is going to mean the old style NSW rookies are close to a thing of the past.Comment
