We were pretty good for a half, actually impressive in some parts.
Outplayed in the last quarter no doubt and outscored as well though it wasnt a disgraceful performance at all.
Jesse White, Nick Smith very good games and Daniel Hannebery as got a future as well. Luke Ablett and Paul Bevan were very ordinary though.

Scoreboard really didnt reflect how we played I thought.
Yes, the only time I get to watch the Swans is when they're up against Fremantle or West Coast.

I'm just very disappointed that the score blew out to that extent in the final quarter and against a team like Carlton.
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore

A team like Carlton? You mean a top 8 team filled with young, quality players that, despite being inconsistent, can on their day challenge the very very best?
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

Trade Barlow due to two blues?? Come on. One was a smothered disposal - yes it was a mistake but he wasn't the only one to have a disposal smothered. And while the free against him was there, I've seen Bazza held in far stronger bear hugs and not get even a sniff from the umpires. All in all I thought Barlow had an excellent game. He was tackling, chasing, found a lot of the ball and most of his delivery was almost perfect. I thought he was easily in our best half-dozen.

Smith's game was highly impressive. White's game was highly impressive. Jack made a couple of mistakes but did some very good stuff too. Vez struggled to find the ball but his set up of the final White goal showed both his reasonable pace on the burst and his footy brain - not to mention that he was thinking "team" from a player sometimes prone to be selfish around goal. Grundy was one of our better defenders - not his fault Kruezer is 3 inches taller. Hannebury didn't look the least bit overawed. (If he's not too sore and he's done his homework, I'd give him another game next week.)

We just need to get more miles into the legs of several players, and start to eliminate some of the energy-sapping stupid turnovers.
Liz, great post completely agree I think some of Barlow's passing and intent was first rate today, and Smith look to be an excellent player with great judgment and timing. The only thing I disagree with is your points on Grundy. He clearly has plenty of ability but lets himself down with his decision making. I have come to cringe when he has (and is around) the ball, and largely I think that is because he is playing out of position, his turnover rate is atrocious this year...and for someone whose been in the system for a decent period he should be starting to minimize that. I don't think Kreuzer (as good a talent as he is) is a good enough reason to make excuses for lower than average execution. Grundy forward of the square is much better than where he has been for the most part this year....but we don't have that option at the moment. Hopefully he can improve.

We almost had them today until Barlow had 2 brain fades in a couple of minutes...White looked great...MOL tried hard but his loss of kicking power is wasting us ops...Mattner...a couple of nice tackles but nuff said...the dainty left footer at the end summed it up.
Generally our skill level remains woeful...how many smothers against us? Ablett just holding someone back...McVeigh tried hard...Jack energy / G&D but disposal will not allow him to be a real star.

Ok, so I'm over my initial disappointment at losing so badly and can say that I was impressed with Jesse up forward. It was exciting to watch (at least in the 1st half) and looks good for the future. On a side note, he actually looks good!!! Bit of eye candy for us!!

              And your point is BSA5?

Well happens that I agree with you. Our kids didn't do too bad, Not happy with Reg, much happier with Cheese, getting worried about some of our oldies.

I once told Jesse when he was being ignored by the little autograph hunters a couple of years ago that they would be looking for him in the future, and I rated him as a gun. And I was right. Good on me (picture private little dance of the toldyouso variety).

Anyone (I haven't read all this thread) note that Coach Roos was conferring with Coach Kirk on the sidelines at one point (or probably more). What do you want to bet Kirky will take on a challenge such as assistant coach sooner rather than later.

Don't recall any particular blues from Reg today. He did have a patch a few games ago but in the last few weeks I think his delivery has returned to where it was earlier in the year (mostly pretty good).

Along the lines of the "O'Keefe/Jack 5 vs 15" confusion (not too bad at the moment because they've cut their hair very differently) I do hope they give Reg a lower number next year. Any free number will do, except 19. The 9s on the backs of him and Mattner make them very hard to tell apart at times.

Nick Smith was freaking awesome, Jesse White shows what he can do - forget 2nd ruck. He would have kicked another 2 goals with a bit more supply.

One of those games where every player (including Ablett) did great things from time to time but most also stuffed up from time to time. If we played with consistency in terms of ball usage and intensity we would win this game with this side.

I only listened on radio so can't really comment.

However the commentators were staggered as to why Jesse White was taken off in the 3rd quarter. He was off for about 10-15 minutes according to them, and given he was brilliant up forward in the first half, they found it pretty odd. This was also the period in the game where Carlton started kicking away.

I think there are some good signs - Smith, White especially. It should be an interesting few years to see how the younger players develop. I expect it will be a tough climb back but at least there are some positive aspects to point to.

Who comes in, who goes. Well, since finals is over,

                        OUT:
Ablett - was good, but not enough. If we are going with youth, we don't need an average 27-28 year old on our list.
Bevan - Yeah, he was alright, tried his best as always, and was good at times, but his decision making was average and disposal not up to scratch.
Richards - Tough, courageous, out cauz of injury but I prob would have dropped him as his disposal and footy brain was not there.
Hanneberry - really impressed. Only 17-18 and did some good things. Let him bulk up in the break and he will be a star. Great commitment, tackled hard, great disposal. Very happy.

                        IN:
DOK - deserves a call up. Lets see what he has got.
                        Murphy - same as above.
Bucchanon - a good game will see him with another chance.
Schmidt - if he is fit, play him. Great, tough player who has got great skills.

One of Bevan or Ablett will stay in. It'll be good for the guys to get an early break. They can rest up, come back better next year. Need to work on our fitness and disposal in the break.

Also can't be hard on veszpa. Played alright, and when he did get the ball was good with it. I honestly do think he is a midfielder rather than a forward.

From what I saw on TV the future looks bright for the Swans with youngsters like Hannerberry,Jack, White, Ves, Pyke, Meredith & haven't seen Johnston I'm going to change my premiership window to 2/3/4 years
As usual the umpiring was all over the place as well as the commentating for example: Dunnystall called the Brad Fisher a free and it wasn't, even on the replay it clearly show Fisher falling over backwards into Barlow sucking a free from the ump, Dunny even after the replay called that a free what tosser, only says how soft the game must of been in his day and that took the score out to 46-61 typical Melbourne commentating.
At 69-53 at with 0:19 to go in the 3rd term we should of got a free right in front of goals when Jesse White was pushed in the back while in a marking contest.
After that well the game was over.
Still enjoyed the game though even with the crap umpiring and commentating
                          Bring on the draft.
Look forward to playing them again.

...who knows with the numbers. "H" comes in and gets #4 and Bird got #14...

(just quietly I think Ben Mathews paid quite good service to the #4 as well)

There must be something in that, as I think Bird will do the #14 proud, he'll be an elite superstar, has looked excellent this year.

I think take your number and make it a winner....after all who would have thought #37 would become the best in the business!!!

#18 will become a famous number

........keen to see who gets #1 :-)

.....this numbers discussion could probably warrant a whole new thread ...hehehe

By the way, love the 1909 jumper replica, though the numbering on the back spoilt a nice jumper Seriously $%##$%# couldnt see a number all day tell and see who was who . Especially Reg and Mattner, though they confused the matter further with the mistakes they made.
Though the Jessmeister looked one huge unit today in that kit.

Yes, I have calmed down now. I am the optimist and just hope this is like the end of 2002 where we took on the competition in 2003 against all the so called experts. A positive note is that at least in the coming weeks we are playing 3 of the top 4 teams and another front runner in Brisbane - a good measure if we play the kids to see how far away we are away from the top. I say rest the seniors that need it (ala have the ops they need in preparation for next year) and are guaranteed to be with the club next year, play the seniors that don't need the break and are guaranteed to be with the club next year, and revise the game plan to incorporate the new and the old. The obvious exclusion is Mickey O - he has to keep playing until he reaches 300. Round 22 will be one big farewell me thinks - Crouch, Barry maybe Kirk and of course Mickey O!!
