Broke this news to my NRL nutter mate, he refused to believe it, so it was gas to rub it in a bit. If he was a journey man there would't be much fuss, but he sounds like a pretty marque player to be the first to switch.

all of the over night hysteria of this is amazing - you would think there is going to be some mass exodus and the world was going to end. It is only 1 person when its all said and done. What half of these League ninnies havent even considered, whilst spitting their dummies, is that if you look at all the Players in Rugby league you would be lucky if there would be 20 players (at the most) who have the build & speed required for AFL - the rest of the remaining players wouldnt last 2 minutes. And out of those 20 players there may only be about 6 or 7 who would possibly adapt to our game. Karmichael Hunt is a rare breed - he has actually played a bit of AFL footy albeit at a reasonable junior level. I mentioned previously Slater Ingliss & Covell - yes they have the build, pace and skills and If coached well they could possibly make the transision - but nothing is a given. there are no guarantees with Hunt either. I think some of the rugby league types should take a Bex, have a cup of tea and a good lie down and get over it.

I had to laugh at that perennial slob (I've seen cleaner blokes sleeping on park benches) and Manly coach Des Hasler going on about how it's "gloves off" and all the rest.

It has been like kicking open an ants nest up here (Sydney). It's funny to see how most of the Leaguies are predicting it's doomed to fail - you can almost smell the fear of it happening again to them. They are already denying it will happen again but I think it would be a very attractive option for players like Hunt who have done it all in their code and are seeking new challenges. It certainly would be more stimulating than a basic sideways transition to rugby union.

Maybe its sour grapes on Des' behalf. He played a season of Rules for my club Hawkesbury while teaching at St Dom's in Penriff, so he probably realises he missed the better boat.

Agreed about the hysterical reaction from the league, although the AFL types are not exactly chilled about it -- I just saw about six stories on the Foxsports website.

Hunt's 45-metre drop punt onto Bucks' chest is already legend. Sounds like he's got the goods to make a go of it -- good luck to the guy. I just wish he'd find a less stupidly-spelt name.

well shortening it to "Mike" really isn't an option now is it? I know - go to the naughty corner!

The Broncos in fact had a player whose original name was Michael Hunt, but decided to revert to his mother's maiden surname De Vere.

well that was a wise move - Rabs Warren would have had a heart attack everytime the lad got the ball!

Had a client once called Michael Hunt ... we weren't allowed to call him Mike (for short)!!!

At least the Gold Coast will be getting a guy who knows how to tackle.

My brother's group of friends at school included a Mike Hunt and an R Slicker.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Tommy Raudonikus buggered it up one night on the radio and was forever banned from ever doing Brisbane games again.
