Behinds: Laidlaw 5 rushed 2 Bevan 2 Veszpremi Dok Schmidt Mumme Barry

great quarter by the swans. Worked real hard in the absence of Schmidt while Barry Bevan and MOD provided options up forward. Murphy still looks lost down back. Vesz very classy as a defender. Great last quarter coming up

not surprised by vezs success as a back. Spent some time down there in the under 18. Is he playing of the half back line? Also is he moving into the midfield.

Leo also in a tracky although not injury related. But will be hard to win from here as all four bench players can't come back on

With laidlaw and Barry out no forward targets to kick to. Murphy ended up rucking most of the qtr with orreal at FB. Mod vesz and bevan tried in vain to carry the side across the line

MOD was best by a country mile, I thought, in an otherwise lacklustre and fairly poor skilled game. Of course he let himself down at times with a few wayward disposals but also kicked two very good goals. His overhead work, his run and carry, and the sheer number of times he found the ball were very impressive. I'm not sure if he already has his cards marked, but he deserves at least one more run in the seniors before the season is out.

It was good to see Vez in a different role. I wonder if they are thinking of trying him down back in the seniors any time soon. Certainly his ability to deliver long penetrating kicks from a half-back flank might be of benefit. He wasn't as prolific as MOD, and some of his attempted passes were beyond the skill level of the recipient, but his brain and class were evident. There are so many Nicky D parallels in the way he plays - the good bits of Nicky D. He looks as if he's been studying tapes of the classic Davis fend off to the chest - I think it will become one of his trade marks as he spends more time towards the middle of the ground.

Thornton worked very hard and did some magnificent stuff, but also had a few bad blues. Still pretty good.

Bevo had an ordinary first half and looked devoid of confidence. But he was very effective in the second half as a medium sized forward. Despite Ablett's two goals later on in the evening, I think I'd rather see Bevan have a shot at that role at senior level than Ablett.

Gordon was lively at times. I also thought RBN had his best game yet for the reserves. He's bulked up a fair bit and is KP height. He seems to have the basic skills requred - but lacks the confidence or the know how to get more involved. So while he's still a long shot, he may yet win himself a spot on the rookie list, especially with lots of spots to fill and a supposedly shallow draft.

Other than that it was pretty slim pickings in terms of anything to get excited about in the short term. Schmidt and Laidlaw were busy early but then went out of the game, for different reasons. Laidlaw presented very well early on but was very wasteful.

Gilly struggled a bit, Murphy struggled more. Brabazon was pretty anonymous, while DOK was very very ordinary.

Did anyone jot the top-up numbers down at half-time? They didn't put them up at the end of the game and I wanted to see who number 50 was. I thought he was the pick of them, notwithstanding a horrid shot at goal in the final quarter from a very kickable position.

#50 was Metcalfe, had his family/friends sitting near by. #50 was my initial suspicion of being McNeil given he was the standout and seemed to be playing onball.

Worried about Murphy - I don't think he wanted to be out there.
DOK was mia, so was Braba.

I have my doubts about whether those names will be on the list next year.

Thought Gordan and Botts well worth a chance, as well as Gilly who needs to bulk up by about 15 kilos. MOD had his best game I have seen, now seems to be able to read the play and act quickly. Impressed. Also Jake is getting better each week, he is obvously working hard.

You wonder why the coaching staff would put a school kid like Hannerbery into a seniors game, and then you watch our ressies play and the answer is just there. He is good enough. Some of the second and third year kids aren't.

Also must make a note of Vespa. He was all over the ground, I think he is trying to mould himself on ROK! Good on him.

In my eyes, Murphy looked lost rather than disinterested. He had little idea of when to lead when playing up forward and when shifted down back was slow off the mark, but I thought he battled manfully at the end when the ball was camped down in our half for most of the last quarter.

He was also taking a lot of deep breaths, which led me to think he hasn't fully regained his fitness since his injury. What impressed me about his play last year was the pure athleticism of the guy, however this year I'm yet to be as awestruck - his efforts appeared laboured.

Bingo. For all those DOK pushers out there, the one main reason why he hasn't debuted yet is because he hasn't been good enough. Hanners's early elevation is evidence that if you're good enough they will play you.

Brabazon was atrocious, missing target by foot and by hand. After Schmidt left, was asked to play in the middle and all that showed was that he's more suited to an outside role. Mind you, Bevan wasn't much better playing in the midfield either.

Cannot see it. He was barely evident. Must be the wrong Brabazon.
Glad Jake got a gong. He has been working on his ground level efforts (which to be honest is a long way down) and it is paying off. I think he had a lot of self doubt during this season, but is working his way out of it. Good on him.

I guess in the end having nil bench was the telling factor in overrunning the side on top the ladder. One of the top-ups did a hammy in warm up, Schmidty gone again tracksuited for much of the match. Laidlaw tweaked something and out for last qtr while Leo was never coming back on other than a major catastrophe. So it was ALL top ups on and no rotations, which meant quite a few punters never had a break for the whole match! Would have been nice to send a message (I still believe it did) to the rest of the comp that last years feat of still cracking a GF gig is a very real prospect! And Belconnen are beatable.
Thought MOD was fantastic, showed some maturity and leadership (couple rough spots, so what) and created a great deal of our forward thrusts off the Half back line. Was moving well and a 1's gig must be close if he can back that form up again. Vesi was lively and seemed to be everywhere, he is certainly a rough diamond and the character that was written about in paperback 'The DRAFT'. Murphy was getting heaps of praise last couple of weeks and I was still very iffy on him - especially after watching him v Queanbeyan. Always huffs and puffs for very little return? Did battle on in sharing the ruck with Orreal who is getting better all the time.
Thought Bevo as a regular 1's player should be able to come back to the 2's and grab the game by the scruff and influence play with more grunt. He seemed lost at times and wonder if there is other factors effecting his game here. Agree with previous comments that DOK hasnt shown enough to get the call up, when we see Hanners perform so well when he is given his chances.
Top ups for those interested (sorry didnt have pen when they showed list at halftime) were Jake Roach (Warners Bay), Justin Steer 52 (ECE), Nick Ryan (St George), Angus Scott (Syd Uni), James Metcalfe 50 (UNSEW/ES) did some good things, Brenton Mumme (Wests), Jerome Farell (Macq Uni), Matty Payne 58? (Penrith) was sound and confident.
Would like to see Dylan McNeil get another run after his good showing in Queanbeyan, and if Nipper Gordon can keep his form of late going believe he is a real good chance of a rookie spot! Early on he did put his melon over the pill and got crunched which is what I have been looking for. Botts I thought was quite and there was no Jay Lewis.
Considering we were without Jesse, Pykey, Smith, and had no bench it was a pretty encouraging (although a tad scrappy at times) result against the top side.
Look forward to your previews come weeks end ugg, keep up the great work!!
