Thanks for the toppie names. Was impressed with James Metcalf (50) and whoever 53 was. What happened to the skinny little kids we used to get. These toppies had bloke builds and generally played with attitude and confidence.

A match report said that Leo had his knee heavily iced when he met up with Lyons pre- seniors game. Was he injured?Comment

MOD: This was the first time I have seen him take on the game to the extend he did in this match, and I have been watching him for years. His timing and decision making were ramped up. I had him slated for delisting, not even trading. That game alone says he can play and its about time he worked that out. BUT its one game. Hope he gets his chances though.
VES: He was all over the place, back line, forward line, and I think he was trying to prove to himself and selectors that he had the motor to keep going just like ROK. Problem was he was all over the place! His kicking is wayward and will nearly always kick long, I doubt his short kicking game exists. He is not yet a team player; I mean he is a great character with boundless enthusiasm but he has to learn that he has to pass the ball to someone in a better position rather than constantly attempting to kick the goal of the year! he isn't good enough yet to do that. Being dropped for him is a learning curve, and it hadn't sunk in as far as I can see. He is good, he will make it from sheer will. But he isn't the only player on the ground. I hate saying this but a game could be lost by his inability to play as a team member, at present.
Bird is a problem. Ablett has team ethics. Not sure what will happen. If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

Geez, unfortunate for Schmidt. Tore his hammy. Really hoping to see him play. Do the Swans give him another chance. Such an injury prone player, and in the last 2 years he has only played one senior game.
MOD should get a game to prove himself, though his disposal is average. Veszpa is a half back to mid player, and I hope Roos begins to play him there more often. 32 possies is obviously very good.Comment

Laidlaw has mere "hamstring tightness" and so the dream might hopefully limp on for him.
Whereas poor Tim Schmidt "tore a hamstring". Which means he now qualifies as the modern-day Heath James, and unless sentiment trumps hard-headed list management this is the end of the long and winding road.
He could still be a fair-standard AFL player; but then again the same was (validly) said of Ben Fixter who was given a further chance and toiled away valiantly without enormous success. The fact is that you're unlikely to ever become a better player than the level you've reached by your mid-20s.
Which is why Brett Kirk's story is so extraordinary.Comment

I caught the second half of the ressies and I think you are being a little generous to MOD Primmy, his disposal along with DOKs looked pretty ordinary. I also think you are a bit harsh on Vez who I thought was very creative in close with handballs and it wasn't like there were a mass of short options; little or no run out of defence. Murphy just took tired and slow. Was Vez lairising in the first half?
Bird doesn't look like he has recovered from that hit to that shoulder against Collingwood (IIRC) and ROK looked pretty sore. Will be tough to back up after that game.
Poor Schmidt. I hope that's not the bell tolling.Comment

Look as much as we think we know how to run the footy department the simple facts are this:
MOD doesn't always play at that level but it is far from the first time he has. And he's been listed amongst the best quite regularly in recent weeks.
As to Vez, I think some of his efforts are high risk but they are also potentially high reward. I suggest that was one of his selling points when we recruited him. He was involved in plenty of "short play" on Saturday, including linking up with handballs at times. I saw little in his game that I would describe as selfish - merely that he is aware of his attributes and that they best use of them is to kick long whenever he can. Sure, he might need to learn to balance it a bit with safer options at times but the flight and penetration of the ball off his foot are beautiful to watch and will be an important factor in the resurgance of the Swans over the next few years.Comment
