    New SSFC CEO

The Australia reports that Glenn Lovett is the tip.

Brendon Gale returns to take helm at Richmond | The Australian

He has an extensive background in sport business consultancy, but is anyone aware of the appointment process here?

I haven't seen any advertisement for this key role. There are usually fairly high profile ads in the smh/age/Australian/etc...
"As a player he simply should not have been able to do the things he did. Leo was a 185cm, 88kg full-back and played on some of the biggest, fastest and best full-forwards of all time, and constantly beat them." Roos.
Leo Barry? you star! We'll miss ya, ''Leapin''.

Apparently Demetriou has approached Lovett to take on the role, but the swans haven't made any contact with him, as yet.

So a bit of speculation on the journo's part.

There is a 4pm press conference at the SCG involving Colless, Baron-Haye and Roos. I wonder if that is the announcement, or more ominously, is Roos going to stand aside??

Hutchy just said opn 1116 that Ross to retire after end of 2010 and that JL would then take over. JL cancelled a meeting with NM due today so Hutchy says. This all worries me.

Just heard that Andrew Ireland will take over as CEO. Is that right?

I have no problem with Andrew Ireland as CEO.
We all knew Roosy wasn't going to be a career coach.
I'd rather have John Longmire as head coach than Terry
Wallace. Also the players like and respect him, good enough for me.

Yes Ireland is the new CEO, the role he had at Brisbane.

So both major appointments have been made without properly canvassing all (or any other) options.

Whilst its hard to make judgement and only time will tell, we are looking like a boys club.

Colless certainly has a strong grip on power at the SSFC.

What does the head of the footy dept do? I'm thinking it's something like 'looks after off-field football issues'. I'm just not clear where the coach's job ends and the footy manager's job begins. And where does the coach stand in relation to the CEO? Are they kind of equal, does one work for the other, or does it depend on the club? Just wondering.

It probably varies from club to club but essentially the football manager is responsible for all things related to football, like managing the coaches (to the extent they need managing), managing the support staff, and over-seeing list management (obviously with input from the coaches). I suspect that at most clubs, the coaches don't get involved in player negotiations, and they may well be unaware of what each player gets paid. So managing the list within salary cap constraints is probably a large part of the football manager's role.

The extent to which the CEO gets involved in footy related stuff will likely depend on how much of a footy background the CEO has, and how strong a football manager the club has. With Ireland as experienced as he is, there probably isn't a huge requirement for MBH to get much involved with the footy side of things. But with Ireland moving into the CEO role, he might still be heavily involved in that side of things, unless they manage to find a similarly experienced person to replace him.
