The Tranquilliser effect - Roos' costly 2006 GF error

I've always said that we were way too calm going into the 2006 GF - and that Roos was trying to keeep everybody unnaturally calm going into such a big game.

Now Lyon has finally admitted this mistake by his great mate cost us back to back premierships.

"As a player he simply should not have been able to do the things he did. Leo was a 185cm, 88kg full-back and played on some of the biggest, fastest and best full-forwards of all time, and constantly beat them." Roos.
Leo Barry? you star! We'll miss ya, ''Leapin''.

    Yeah, right.

I would have thought that John Worsfold decision to finally play a loose man in defence in front of Hall and Micky O after refusing to to do so in the last 5 games against us, was the deciding factor.

For large parts of the 2006 GF we played much better football than 2005, but it was that move alone that kept West Coast in the game and the reason for their victory.

Well unfortunately Bazza hasn't been calm, confident or relaxed since and his kicking and marking hasn't improved either

Get over it, it is history now. Roos thought he was doing the right thing

The way the Saint's supporters are handling their loss could be described as "naturally uncalm" - tossing in memberships, trading all their draft picks, cutting half the list, etc, etc....

So according to you a good first half is deemed useless in a GF?

The Saints had a reasonably good first quarter, and first half, whilst it took us until half time to actually get going in 06 due to the conscious effort of Roos to play things down in the lead up to the game. He didn't get the balance right.

If St Kilda had ruled the second half like we did in 06 they woud be premiers right now - by a long way.

No doubt Roos has learned from his mistake and will take account of this in his second stint as coach down the track.

Ah, according to the papers today the Saints lost, and they lost by more than we did in 2006.

They still played better in the first half than we did in '06.

Maybe Saints were pumped up too much for the first half and couldn't run it out in the second because they had already spent their lolly money?

For a a coach to come out and make comments like that about another coach shows pretty poor form in my opinion.

                            Anyway I'm glad Saints lost.
