A bit like Hall in '06, Schneids is going to have nightmares about that one for a while to come. That snap in the 1st and the one on Harley in the last are ones an experienced player should not miss.
Be very interesting to see what Lyon does in the trade period.

I think it will be very interesting to see how both Schneider and Milne come up mentally next year as they have to be feeling what Hall felt in 06 that they let the team down.
We all saw how it affected Hall and I wonder if the same will happen with this pair or if they will be able to move on.

I have nightmares over that one... Had him for first goal as well as the Norm Smith.

Dempster was solid but unspectacular as an 'attacking defender'... no, 'defensive forward'... ah, whatever the hell he was meant to be.

However, for me the #2 defining moment in the match, after the infamous Zac Dawson spoil on Gary Ablett, was Dempster's shot for goal in the last quarter. Not easy, but very gettable; and if he'd kicked it, more likely than not the Saints would have won. Analogous to the Chad Fletcher (?) poster for the Weagles in the last quarter of the 2005 GF.

And I'd generally prefer Dempster to be kicking for goal to kick the match-winner than, say, Riewoldt or Koschitzke.

Teams play differently depending on the scoreboard (more attacking/defensive, ramping up/down the tempo), especially in a close match. Therefore, in a close one, final quarter misses really do count for more than howlers like Schneider's first shot of the game.

Surprised more people haven't talked about that Dempster shot.

Too much kicking around the corner on a wet day rather than normal drop punts.

Cats had Granny experience on their side, Saints were spooked and had stage fright - Clark's HTB and not checking periphally was not good - goal to Cats, Montagna misses, Shneider misses, Kossie misses, Milne misses, Dawson clanger - Cats goal, second quarter misses by Milne (twice) , McWalter and Shneider miss (hard one).

They fought hard to stay in the game, which was a beauty. They will be be a bit more GF hardened next year. You cant' beat being there, having the experience.

I'm afraid I think everyone is being far too nice to Dempster, he got totally towelled by Mackie....which was his ENTIRE reason for being selected.....CONTROL MACKIE. Mackie was just far, far too good at avoiding trouble and getting the ball, especially early.

On the other hand if he'd kicked the goal he should have kicked it would have been a genius move for R. Lyon.

Absolutely. Mackie was one of the few Cats who had the space to apply his polish and poise early on, and allowed them to run as they like to do.

It reminded me of 06 GF when Dempster was pushed forward to stop Embley in the last half of the game and the great symbol of his poor job was when he couldn't even get to the contest late in the match when Goodes pumped it long and Embley took a mark in the back pocket to stall our progress.

Dempster has the skills of a good footballer, but lacks either the nous or confidence to give himself a chance to use them.

He doesn't have a natural position, doesn't do anything to break games open and doesn't get much of the ball. Little future in footy I'm afraid - and reckon Roosy finally realised it when he moved him on.

To be honest, I dont think Milne would give a @@@@. He strikes me as a player who prefers to play in unaccountable struggling teams like St Kilda were, rather than contenders where each players has to stand up.

But I think this GF has proven that losing Schneider and Dempster for draft picks has been a win for the swans. Dempster is a very marginal top 22 for a flag contender, and Schneiders last good game was the 2005 semi against the saints. He's handy, but wont win you a game.

Saints fans need not worry though. You'll make another grand final and probably win one. You cant just expect to win your first one in umpteen years out of the blue. Good sides continually make finals, and grand finals, and then let the law of averages translate that into flags.

Its funny - I was p*ssed off about the trade again when Dempster got named in the GF team.

Although I still have a soft spot for them both, I felt better about it after the game

We'll see what the Dogs, Adelaide, the Hawks and Geelong say about that

I had totally forgotten about that. I remember it well now. It was that incident where out of pure frustration given the way the game was going, I put my head between my knees and screamed FAAAAARRRRRRKKKKKK. Only to have some officious security nazi tell me to watch my language.
