    Playfair given 1 month

I read Playfair has been given the next month or so to prove he has overcome his dodgy hamsrings/tendons. The guy has played just 63 games over 8 seasons, kicking just 39 goals...In 2 seasons with the Swans he has played just 11 games .....The reason the Swans (Ireland) give for persisting with him is...wait for it....because he's tall.....
IMO, given his history and quality, that's not a good enough reason.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

If he's not going to be part of our next premiership team, he should make way for someone who will be. Playfair is no spring chicken and he's got problems with injuries. De-list him. Let's see if there are any other teams who want him.

Its not so much that he is taking someone elses place. He is good for the team, when he is on deck, because he can fill a number of tall emergency positions. We just don't have that many talls, especially as backup.

I hope he makes it. I doubt he would be in a premiership 22, but if say Reg came down with a cold, then he could pinch hit perhaps not in his position but in a position on the ground vacated by someone who takes up Reg's.

They can't all be schtars!! If you remember Fossy was rarely in the starting 18, but he had his position within the game plan and it was a hugely valuable one. It is probably that they are hoping Henry can make the same contribution. However, saying that......he does break easily.

Precisely! It should be obvious to all and sundry that he's one of these guys who unfortunately gets injured too easily. He's been more of a passenger than a contributor since he's been with us. That's not a reflection on him as a person, either.

Remember Stephen Doyle? He did a good job in the 2006 GF for us but spent far too much time otherwise recovering from injuries. With the wisdom of hindsight, we should have let him go earlier, and maybe we would have had a more settled replacement for Jason Ball when he quit. Maybe 2006 would have had a happy ending for us.

Let's not make the same mistake with Playfair. De-list him now and start work on developing someone else.

While we're on the subject of injured players, it worries me that someone as young as Vespremi has spent so much time out injured. Ditto for Lewis Johnstone. It's not a good sign to get a serious injury so young.

every player will need to manage injuries........it happens to the best of them

i like your zeal to cut dead wood and Im not one to carry passengers either.......if he was 5"10 with his injury pattern and lack of becoming a out and out starting midfielder than cut him based on injuries and lack of potential

but Ireland and the coaching staff have been within their rights to keep a tall and persist with a base price player.......give our lack of height and therefore ack of flexibility in matchups week to week

That's all well and good as long he stays injury-free. On past experience he won't, and then we'll really be screwed. He's too much of a risk. De-list him now and go to work on someone else.

I'm a bit worried about Vespremi's injuries, but its too early to be too worried about lewis Johnston I would of thought. We do seem to get more then our fair share of injuries with the younger players however.

As for Playfair, if it was me I'd get rid of him, but I can understand the reasoning behind the argument that we could use having a fit Playfair in the squad.

                like who ?

                Currie?

                Seaby?

                Mumford?

                Pyke?

These guys are ruckman builds!........that need to play Ruck......and having 4 guys at 200cm at fairly inexpensive price except for Mumford is grat value for money with injuries

But back to forwards.........if we cut Playfair who?......has got the experience and credibility?............I am sure there are one or two they have their eye on as they have gone to the media re Playfair but they would have cut him already unless they had a sure bet

You're probably right about Playfair - he's only being retained for the moment until we find a suitable replacement.

Give Seaby a run during the pre-season down forward. If it works, well and good. We don't have a shortage of ruckmen to choose from, so we may as well give it a try. I just hope at least one of them ends up as good as Jolly.

If Seaby doesn't work in the forward line, we'll probably have to settle for White and Goodes in the short-term, with support from either Moore, Jack, and maybe O'Dwyer.

Currie already plays a fair bit down forward in the 2's, and may well end up playing there...He's got a stong set of hands and can take a good contested mark, he needs to work on his goal kicking.
I've got no doubt both Seaby and Mumford will be encouraged to drift forward, ala Jolly.
Goodsey will also probably spend time up forward. As will ROK, particually if he stars getting hard tags next year, which is likely.
Hopefully Johnston gets up and going
On top of that...If we end up signing Bradshaw, then there seems even less reason to keep Playfair.

If the "kids" can't cut in the Canberra league than throwing them into the deep end ain't automatically going to work them into champions even with time and effort. The pressure and intensity may even be counter-productive. We love our up and comers and they are going to form the foundation of our next "premiership tilt" but don't forget any promise of White, Grundy, Johnson whoever will be more thaqn partly be built on time and experience in the reserves.

We were all amazed at Zac Dawson this year as he came good after finally overcoming being carved up in the big time. Such a come back is an exception rather than the rule and that's why it was such a surprise.

Sometimes you better hpe you don't get what you wish for. Personally I wish Nathan Brown would play at the Swans if I can't have Cuz.
