The Swans Biggest Loss

I have no intention of getting into the dressing room inner sanction, and am quite capable of forming my own opinion. I just turn up early every week, watch the ressies and the ones, enjoy the games, abuse the umps, agree to disagree with my mates on many Swans issues and have a good time. And commit what I see to the aging grey cells.
Pre Missen the ressies struggled in the Canberra comp, mainly because there were not enough fit players. Once Missen?s methods to bite began to then we had major argument on this forum when our ressies were dominating the Canberra comp and winning by 12 plus goals week after week. The Canberra league introduced rules limiting the number of listed players who could be on the ground and the bench. We had good young players sitting on the pine scratching themselves instead of playing footy. And the dominance continued.
This year we have been lucky if there have been enough fit listed players to make up the quota on the field and normally none on the interchange. The missing listed players were all nursing injuries. As a result the team could not make the finals in a six team comp.
Meanwhile Missen went to St Kilda and suddenly they are achieving miracles in keeping their best team on the field. I?m sure our fitness people do the best they can. But statistics say that their best this year was simply not good enough.
It?s not a matter of good and bad luck, but a matter of good and bad player management. Missen has proved it.Pay peanuts get monkeysComment

I would like to believe that our injuries weren't caused as a result of his departure. I would have thought that the other staff would have learnt something from him being here.
It''s only natural that the condition of St Kilda players would dramatically improve upon his arrival but that too will taper out in time, as it did for us.
I thought our greatest loss was the English gentleman the Swans hired for this past season to improve the goal kicking. In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment

Of course, that could have been coincidence. Just as it could have been coincidence that Brett Kirk made an inspired speech at 3/4 time and we won a premiership. Or that the Eagles played out of their skins to beat us in 2006 but were later found out for drug use . . .
Meanwhile I'd prefer to rely on the principals we were taught in Logic in first year Philosophy.Comment

"Misso is top notch," Gibbs says. "If you haven't got the right people, the program won't work. There is a fair bit of subjectiveness about it so you need honesty between players and staff. That relies on the rapport Misso has with players."
It's probably no coincidence that the 2005 Swans and 2009 Saints were quite mature lists. Players knew their bodies and which niggles needed monitoring and which could be played through.
Maybe young players are less likely to make a niggling injury known until it is too late, because they're desperate to prove themselves in a very ruthless industry. They would also be more injury-prone because their bodies are still growing and getting used to the rigours of AFL football.
In our case, our older players are still our most durable. Goodes, B1, B2, Kirk, O'Keefe - rarely if ever miss games. It could be just be luck, but I assume these guys know their bodies and when they need to back off or push themselves harder at training as per the Missen method described in the article."As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

I remember at the time that many people in the media were very critical of Grant Thomas for playing players when injured. This especially applied to Kosi. Some were saying it threatened to shorten his career.
Lyon and Missen have brought a previous winning combination to the Saints. However after people have praised Missen as a miracle worker, I believe that is no doubt that Reiwoldt was a passenger in the GF. Remember Schneider's hammy's with the Swans.
I have no doubt Missen has improved the Saints significantly but I don't think his departure from the Swans has brought about our injuries.
After all, unless someone has insider information, we are all just guessing what we think might be true.
I would love to read or hear an interview with Nathan Gibbs. It surprises me why a dill brain journo doesn't interview him regarding injuries in NRL v AFl, how his background has helped and any truth about Swans injuries increase associated with Missens departure. In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment

Why are you so hard on people wouldn't they let you in the changerooms with your camera
you sound like a the typical armchair critic and yes I do know who you are and yes I believe you have no idea either other than listening to people who will take time to waste time talking to you
Wow those cranky pants pills are working!!! and he certainly doesnt bring a camera to the game. He diligently takes notes during the reserves so as he can provide match reports for RWO - if you really knew who he was you would know this. He is a good mate, passionate about his footy, gives the umps and players a spray when required (like we all do in our own way) and is a damned good seat minder. Aussie Ange & I have sat with him for years and js normally joins us at ANZ - I have met many good RWO people through ORB, for which I am thankful.
anyway back on track - I'm with ORB on this too & I have thought similar things. Naturally our list is ageing but Missen was a great success 4-5 years ago when the now aged ones were in their prime. Now that we have a new batch supposedly in their prime, they seem to be lacking a bit. Perhaps Davey boy has a patent on his skills (or someone forgot to take notes!) either way his departure did make a bit of difference.
Well we just wait and see what 2010 brings!I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

Roos was asked in an interview in one of the Melbourne papers in 2005 on how lucky we were with no injuries.
His response was that apart from about 25 core players most of the other squad members had been injured and been out for 3-4 weeks at a time including our captain who missed most of the year.Comment

I still think its a "woman" who sits near us (who has locked horns on the odd occassion with our ORB) could be wrong though.
Oh well we will see next year - if St Kilda and in particular Kosi, stay relatively injury free for another year then I guess it will prove that the Missen man is a genius.
Next year cant come soon enough !!!I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................
