I don't think we need the "if you don't have passion you can't relate" and "well everyone clapped so /discussion" type comments.
I think it's pretty clear.
I have taken it into consideration, some parts still seem like a bit too much even considering the audience and venue, but I've already said that I enjoyed the speech for the most part.Comment

Context
The Context is everything as alluded to by Primmy. I have listened to 1/2 time addresses that would have you in stitches if you heard them in your living room but at the time,in the context of a game they were totally inspiring. Its because bare words don't convey the EMOTION that gets communicated and emotion is what stirs people to great heights. Kirk's ability to connect in this manner is amazing and you would listen with great respect to whatever he said because HE said it. Intellectual analysis of content misses the whole point! In a Footy club you want players to run through brick walls for Kirky..and many of them would! Great Speech!Comment

I thought it was clear, but I was wrong. What do those comments have to do with the speech? I was referring to some of the reactions in this thread (you were quoting and referring to a post of mine - regarding context, so they have nothing to do with Kirk's speechAgain - Context has everything to do with the speech!!!!. How passionate I am about work or anything else in my private life is irrelevant when it comes to my opinion on certain aspects of the speech. Noone - certainly not me is calling into question your passion...as I stated previously.
Okay, but my point was do we all have to agree because it received a standing ovation? If you were there and the speech was made to you at that time, no - otherwise you should take it into consideration. I am sure if I was there I would have stood and applauded, but does that mean I can't have any conflicting thoughts on the speech and have to just follow the popular opinion? I can guarantee if you were there you'd have a different opinion. If someone could organise Kirk to go round to your house and give the speech I'm sure you'd feel differently.
Any speech is more han words on paper. It isn't meant to be read it's meant to be listened to. All great orators have completely different styles - if one was to read another's speech they would suck.
If anyones interested check out Winston Churchill....had massive learning disabilities as a child, but worked within them and developed a style to manage them - becoming one of the greatest speechmakers in history.

How about a thread for ex players and those who were close enough to hear of funniest pre -match, 1/2 time and post match addresses? One I will never forget goes like this
"See this! Its a Football and you &*^%$ better start running and getting it
or we are #$%^&!!" It was roared however not spoken which had a different effect.Comment

Great words by Kirk ... meaningless if you do not back them up with actions ... he does.
Appropriate? ... Hell YES! ... directed primarily at over achieving kids who's talent has meant that they have rarely ever had to "work" a day in their lives ... until now.
They are about to have the acid applied, and its sink or swim for them ... for you and I, we are well qualified for our jobs, and there are thousands of positions of similar stature out there in the work force for us.
For these kids who are being "preached" to ... they are just another piece of meat in the process line for the football club ... there are 22 positions available week in week out for these kids, and they have a very limited window of opportunity to prove themselves ... the upside is a lucrative career path ... the downside is anonimity and the prospect of finding a "real job" ... alarming!
Over the top? ... no, it is reality.Comment

I've said this before on RWO and will say it again.
In years to come - as far as a captain's impact on our club goes - Kirky will be considered to be the equal of Skilton and Kelly."Notwithstanding the sight of all our miseries, which press upon us and take us by the throat, we have an instinct which we cannot repress, and which lifts us up." - PascalComment
-
i already think it is greater. The others were great leaders by example but Kirk has been instrumental in moulding the club into its present form.then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i knowComment

Kirk's speech simultanelously displays some of the great strengths of the present club, and some of its weaknesses, IMO.
(I also remain of the view that it is a bit naff, and had I heard it I think I might have got the giggles - I wonder if the "secret society" has a password to get into the change rooms and if they send each otehr messages in invisible ink?)Comment

And a pretty dysfunctional place it is. No doubt, many are, but to put the Sydney footy club on a pedastal as an exemplar of best practice is as one-eyed as the weekly comments on umpiring during the season.

So you don't like the speech. No need to cry about it.Comment

It has been said many times by many clubs that they hold the Sydney Football Club in high regards to their culture and processes. Even Bomber Thompson has mentioned numerously that they themselves moulded their football club around the Sydney model. So I really don't know what your beef is.

Where did Bomber say That! link please, because I can't believe he would have he has achieved so much more than Sydney has and most likely ever will. Geelong is up there with Brisbane as one of the all time great sides. If he did then not only did he achieve it he improved on it and still is.The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.Comment
