Can Mike amaze us all and keep lifting to new levels ??

the guy adapted quite amazingly and he appears to have that steely attitude !

Is Seaby and Mummy under pressure ??

In short, no. Pyke wasn't meant to play last year, and it was only through a stretched ruck division that he did. That's not a knock on him, what we saw was very impressive all things considered, but with Seaby and Mumford now in the team, I think Pyke will be cemented in the reserves so he can get some decent minutes, rather than coming off the bench 7 minutes per quarter, which won't have done his development much good at all.

With any luck, towards the end of the year he'll be putting some pressure on our other ruckmen to break into the side. Mumford and Seaby will be pretty safe early on though, at least from Pyke (Currie seems to be becoming the forgotten man, and Orreal could be at the point of stepping up too).
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

AG, congrats on getting Pykey's name right.
And I agree with BSA5. Also I wouldn't mind seeing him tried as a tall defender at times - he has the height and the speed to be seriously good if he reads the play.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Now Auntie just needs to work on getting LRT right!

I agree with the tall defender theory, in fact I mentioned it myself in a thread a few weeks back.

IMO, the only position for Mike is ruck. I'm afraid his disposal and decision making would let him down if put under pressure deep in the backline. Will lead to too many turnovers.

At present I'm sure you're right, but I'd like to see him given the chance to learn, say in the twos.
And credit to swansrob for coming up with the idea earlier; I don't remember if you mentioned the example of Fletcher? Not that Pyke is in his class - very few defenders are IMO - but it's not often that you get that combination of height and serious speed.

I agree. It also takes years of junior football to learn to be a key defender able to anticipate a forwards movement and knowing where to kick the ball under pressure.Learning how to spoil without infringing takes great skill.Ruck is a freer position with movement all over the ground. Its ruck or nothing for Pyke.

I spoke to him for a while at the B&F. He said that they are talking about trying him in various positions and he was excited by the prospect. So it seems like the coaches think he's smart enough and enough of an athlete to learn quickly.

if 2009 is an indication, then he's a good 2-3 years minimum away from playing anywhere but the ruck

Have a look at Setanta O'Hailpin, its taken him a number of years on Carlton's list before his AFL positioning and decision making has come good (even then he rates low on this)

I reckon if Seaby and Mummy come good this year, Mike may be in trouble

Is that right? Good luck to him then.I still maintain he will need a considerable learning time if he is not to stuff up badly when exposed to standing skilled forwards. I would hate to see what Fev would do to him or Riewold.Sure he has the height ,weight and speed to go with them but they would kill him skill wise.
