Its rare that you find a so called soccer fan that recognises this fact.

Its soccer. Always has been and always will be. Football is a game where the prime object of the game -scoring goals - can only be achieved by the use of ones foot.

Now on to the WC. Meh, I tend to think it will be a bit like Melbourne's bid for the 96 Olympics. Once in the Southern Hemisphere in 150 years is enough for FIFA.

Of course the SCG is not a venue in the bid. We do want FIFA to take us seriously.

Would the SCG be available for AFL ?
Any developments on Blacktown or Showgrounds ?
Will Aussie Rules get anything out of a WC ?
Will the changes to Homebush prevent AFL from being played .
What will the GWS be doing ?

        .

All the venues being talked about would be in a lot of trouble come game day without a Water Closet. I expect the bid to go down the toilet anyway. As if the Poms would let us get the gig.

I just think our bid is a tad embarrassing due to the wrong shapes of most of our stadia and some of the crappy places being put forward as host cities (Townsville!).

England are a shoo-in for 2018 and in 2022 the US must be considered favourite for TV, sponsorship and geographic reasons.

Thanks for all the feedback .
I'm across what is happening outside of NSW .
Basically the euphoria of gaining the holy grail is being replaced by the realization that it could be a huge taxpayer funded loss with a large negative impact on the AFL and no stadium gains or compensation .

The fact that the SCG will probably open for business (FIFA require training venues as well) means Sydney will be the least affected of the cities , in fact there is a chance the SCG could attract a few tourists .Also they could host a few extra games to help out the logjam of AFL games .

What is the biggest ground open to the NRL ?

            .
            give it to the game

Yikes. Who's going to break that to the Americans? Or the rugger types?

I see "football" as just a generic word that is used in different parts of the world to describe different sports. It needs to be interpreted in the context of where it is spoken. Followers of any one code of football who claim that it applies just to their brand are just being pig-headed or arrogant or both.

Yes soccer comes from Association football and that's what the FIFA title contains .
Soccer is game where for most part players soccer the ball and occasionally throw and kick the ball by punting .Scoring is by getting a ball into the net not neccessarily by kicking .

Australian Football is a game where players kick a ball specifically designed for kicking accurately over long distances and where the aim to scoring is to kick a ball untouched between the posts .

Soccer should really be called Cambridge Rules Football just like another school formed Rugby Rules .

                .

Yeah, id laugh my head off if we went through all this drama with the battle of the codes only to find out that australia doesnt even get the world cup at all! Heres hoping we dont anyway, not a fan of soccer at all, would rather watch rugby, and that is saying something!

Well, I don't think 2018 or 2022 is a realistic bet, but barring the downfall of FIFA there will be 2026, 2030, etc etc. Assuming it all goes to theory Asia wouldn't have held a World Cup since 2002, so you can expect heavy bidding from most of the Asian Confederation next time round, including Australia.

I like this theory and say the same. Maybe soccer could also be called Headball?

I'd like to think that afl fans are more sophisticated than rugby league fans. Apparently not if some of the attitudes here are anything to go by.

Let's hope the people of Sydney's west are not as sportingly parochial or the GWS team will sink faster than the WC bid ever will.

I thought there would be a big need for parochial fans .

Seeing as this is Frank Lowy's baby - he will move heaven and earth to get it coz with old Franky, what Franky wants Franky normally gets. However, the old fella is hitting 80 - so if he makes it 2018 or 2022 he will be eating his dinner through a straw by then anyway. Lowy could easily pay for the tournament himself.

The thing is - FIFA are so arrogant and are so used to those soccer fanatics in the Northern hemisphere pandering to their every whim that I dont think they realise that there is a vast majority in this country who dont give a fig about soccer or the world cup and that they will be really pissed off having their normal footy season interrupted by an over hyped yawn fest & grass diving competition.

Also - the real sticking point, despite the major interruption to the AFL & league seasons is the ultimate cost from tax payers funds. I pay taxes (well we all do begrudgingly of course ) so that it goes to all of our people here for services like hospitals, schools & transport! OK we all know what a frivolous bunch our governments, Federal, State & Local are - but considering the economic state this country is in, to waste so much money on a soccer carnival, to me is negligent. The tender/bid, call it what you will, is a joke. Its a junket for the old farts at FIFA to ponce around the world at someone elses expense , toy with the emotions of every bidding nation and then decide which one played the game the best, served the yummiest canapes and gave them the best bribe gifts!.

I still think its an abolute wank that its called the biggest sporting event on earth - what rot - its only one sport played, in the end, by a handfull of countries who were lucky (see France) to qualify, I mean even New Zealand got in!!! and then they take a month to play it? boy they really need a time and motion study.

If FIFA want to come here then they have to fit in with us, not us fit in with them.

And if some see that as sticking my head in the sand - so be it - dont care really - like I dont care about soccer!

More oval?? Only possible by shortening the field. The width is limited by the angle of the upper stands.
