1994 Sydney v Saints, SCG. What happened next....

Have just been watching said game, as I came into AFL Easter Sunday 1996 and my history has holes; couple of questions.

I can see that Locket poleaxed Caven (the poor barstard). And why the head honchos honed in on Locket after that for sheer bloody mindedness.

But what tha! There seems to have been a humungous personnel turnover within two years; Derek, Kell, Dale, Bayes, Jason Mooney, Filandia, Luff, then Minton-Connell appear to be the only ones left in 1996. Can this be right? Thoughts? Or better yet, information and discussion.

Also, a player I cannot place in any context - Sanford Wheeler (do I have the name right?) - who what when where. I am sure I would remember him if he had a "reputation".

Judging from Rose and Daniels, I can say it has been a good 16 years since we had a proper redhead at the Swans..

    Thanks.

Not quite right, Dunkley, Stafford, Dean Mcrae, DAniel Mcpherson (on-list in 1996 Eade did not like him) were on the list not necessarily getting a game - the revelation that Dunkley was a quality fullback was still in the future 1995 (Troy Grey still played fullback in 1995)

Also on the list would be Wade Chapman who had a legendary year in 1996, also Adam Heuskes, Stefan Carey, Brad Seymour, Dion Myles, the devil Simon Garlick
Sanford (prior Matthew) was African American, had talent but never seemed to take footy too seriously, was soon gone. 14 or so of the 1996 GF side were on the list in 1994

Back then 1st year drafted players rarely got a gig

Minton-Connell was gone in 1996 - traded for some guy called Lockett

I am sure BBB or MtS will have views. I mentioned Wade Chapman so BBB will be in mourning again

I am pretty sure that was Wade kicking on his non prefered side awesome skills

Thanks for that Reggi. Wade came on in the 4th quarter of the 1994 game (I don't think the word Rotation had been invented then). He is a hero of mine. I hate how short his career was.

Those other players mentioned didn't play in the game I was watching in 1994, including Dunks! But there were names playing who were cracking good, but I just don't know them and it seemed odd they would all disappear within 18 months. (from my viewpoint anyway).

Sanford (previously Matty) Wheeler played 43 matches for Sydney (which I think places him just about in the top 25 percentile of games played for the Swans - so there are worse players to have donned the red & white). He was pretty quick but - like Noggy - got tackled a bit (no point of having leg speed if you're not sure when to release the ball) and sometimes had dubious disposal. He also might have been at an advantage of playing at a time when they were sturggling to win games. Sanford fell out of favor toward the end of his career (don't think Barass was overly fond if his dreadlocks and that he used to ride a skateboard to training, and funnily enough, his decreased game time - just 7 matches in his final season - also coincided with when the Swans were on the improve) and after a knee injury and was delisted at the end of 1994 and returned to play local footy in Sydney (where he was still pretty handy I've been told). Still, he has gone on to become a Assistant Vice President and successful Senior Financial / Wealth Management Advisor with a prominant wealth management firm in the US... and probably achieved much more than he would have as an AFL player (alhough to have had the first African American to play in a Grand Final - if he had lasted until 1996 - and the first Irishman to win one, would have been a nice bit of trivia )

Ooohh you guys are really useful. Now if you can (and thanks in advance) can you fill me in on

          Hepburn
          Rose
          Dean McRae
          Neil
Watters (who I thought was pretty sharp)
Granton (I am probably wrong here, its a called name and the callers were pretty crap).

I know about Jamie Lawson (now can see why he is lamented)

Dale Lewis was a very bright star and I don't think he lived up to his potential.

Luffy had a blinder in this game; cannot see why he was not rated by Barrassi.

And for those who like to know these things, I noted a very skinny Peter Hadley in the cheer squad.

That's Peter Hatley - and even in 1994 he would have been in his usual spot between the player race and bench, by pure coincidence (or was it planning Peter?) the perfect location for the handheld camera to get many closeups of him. He rarely sat with the cheer squad in Sydney.

In 1994 I knew Peter only as "Mr Oi Oi Oi" - and as an umpire of junior footy. I got to actually know him during the overnight queueing for 1996 GF tickets. He was 1st in the Q, I was 3rd. The guy between had his father queueing for RL GF tickets just up the road. He was heading south for the AFL on Sat then back for the RL on Sunday. He graciously supplied me with an extra membership card as one of mine wasn't valid for the GF (bought a week too late).

Peter has now migrated south and these days does sit with the CS on his regular forays north.

Could be wrong but I think we got Hepburn as an ageing North player.
Gavin Rose was a Ranga ruckman who was overtaken by Stafford. Never really much good.
Dean McRae would have been ageing by then. Useful when we were no good, but not up to it when we improved. I think he played a few seasons of ressies at the end though.
Robbie Neil was a potential champion recruited I think from Canberra. Got pissed off about some training practices of Gary Buckenara and walked. Lured back by Barrassi but never really came on. Dominated in a NSW win over Victoria in State of Origin.
Watters went to Freo I think.
Granton, not sure who that was.

Bit more info......Robbie Neill crossed to St Kilda for 23 games.

"Granton" might be Neil Brunton who was little more than a tagger. Played 71 games through the "dark years".

Sanford Wheeler was a junior footballer at Seven Hills FC, was recruited from Holroyd-Parramatta (Back then our Senior feeder club) and returned to Sydney footy via East Coast in the early 00's. Great fella for memory, played footy with my older brother.

'Granton' is definitely Brunton. Handy stopper. Number 13.

Neill was involved in the Plugger trade. Played in the '97 GF.

McRae came from North. Handy for a while but too slow. Played early '96 before being dropped and never returned.

Hepburn was an ordinary ruckman who came from North and also played some footy for the Eagles from memory. Only lasted one year I think.

Rose was pushed out in '96 when Stafford started to make it. Pretty sure that he played some footy for the Collingwood reserves. Was OK while we were terrible.

Watters came from the Eagles and then left for Freo when they came into the competition. Ball magnet with average kicking skills.

Played in the Saints losing GF side I think in 97 - started on the bench. Later played with Norwood in the SANFL with considerable success.
