I don't like foot stress injuries, they just seem to drag on forever (LRT 2007) and the return time invariably just blows out, can even end careers (Egan, Croad).

Everything crossed he'll be ok, think he's going to be a real loss after what we've seen.

Egan and Croad weren't stress fractures, were they? They had properly broken feet, I thought. Egan's was even an ankle, I think. But yes, stress fractures of any kind can be a bugger. In cricket you see it happen to the back with quicks (Hilfenhaus has really been held back at times with that), and of course it took LRT an entire season to regain proper form after his foot injury. Hopefully, given Birdy doesn't focus his game too much around running (unlike a McVeigh or ROK, for instance), and is more of an in-and-under, short-steps-then-dish-off type player, it won't affect his form too much after he comes back. He REALLY looked ready to explode this year.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

LRT once told me he ended up in big strife because he got a bit macho and didn't actually confess to the medicals that he had a problem until it really became a major problem. Birdy looks like he learned from LRTs mistake. Good luck kiddo.

            Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

THIS is why I hate the pre-season. If we'd lost game one, we probably wouldn't be talking about this now.

            Not happy Jan.

Yeh, this sucks big time - Bird is one of the kids we really need to turn into our next gen of leaders. Good luck to him.

He would have had a "hot spot" which can be felt before the full stress fracture sets in.

Egan and Croad had what I believe were fractures of the foot. The problem with the foot is that bones are either small or thin and there is a lack of blood flow (the least blood flow of any part of the body I am told). If a main vein is severed or damaged the blood flow is severely restricted and the damaged bone doesn't recover to it's original state. In Egan's case he tried to train so he could play finals only days after the injury, and I speculate that he damaged the foot even more.

What else can happen is that the ligaments and related muscles in the lower leg can get affected because of the lack of exercise or not being quite right in how the ligaments join up etc in that area. I have a son who had one of these foot injuries and he was lucky. He had a green stick injury to the talus bone (flat bone in the foot) and had 3 tiny pins inserted, however his veins didn't appear to get much damage. He can run but his he usually pulls up sore in the foot, probably because of the impact, but strangely can ride horses without pain.

I was concerned about Johnston last year because he had a foot injury that prevented him playing. Hope he comes on the scene soon to put those concerns to rest.

From what I gather Bird has a big toe problem so it appears there is no relationship to the Egan and Croad injury. He may have to have special boots made to cushion the toe on his return.

Ditto...it clearly looked as though he'd lost weight and was generally sharper with his movement.
