From the team that played last week

    In: McVeigh, Grundy
Out: Hannebery, Currie, Barlow, Pyke, Gilchrist

I'm disappointed that TDL didn't make it.

I am too, but considering he is just back from injury, I think all it signifies is that they don't think he'll be match fit for Round 1.

OK, the Swans website has an entire list of 26 players, including Hanners and Barlow. Looks like we will be having subs, etc, so Hanners and Barlow will get runs after all. Most teams have named 29 players, including North, so it looks like we just haven't bothered naming the last 3. Seems a bit odd, but oh well.

Roos has said that only those in contention for round 1 would be playing, so there is no point naming 3 more players who will only take game time off someone else.

The knee injury has obviously seen him drop down the peckling order. I suspect Rohan may even take his place. TDL's injury isn't that bad though - I saw him running laps of Centennial Park on Saturday.

Or maybe, just maybe, he was given a chance to prove himself and did not reach the expectations of the match selection committee?
RWO in general has regularly misunderstood the tasks required for certain footballer's in the past, it may well be the case again.
IMO MOD is going alright, not great, not terrible. He deserves a few senior games in a row and maybe that will happen, just not a the start of the year.

In any case, I'm disappointed to see that O'Dwyer isn't there. There's no way he could have been dropped for last match, could he? I'd assumed he was just rested, as he was one of our best across the first two games. Maybe he has a niggle. Nothing worth the injury list, but just something to be cautious over. We all know how cautious Roos has been with blokes battling niggles in the preseason.
O'Dwyer seemed to us to play very well and like you,I am surprised he is not in the squad. We know however the Swans place an enormous amount of Kudos on following the game plan. Did O'Dwyer follow the gameplan? The other possibility is a breach of the club protocols or training routine that we don't know about. Late to training? Wrong diet? Out of all of the above I would guess its a niggle as the kid seems serious about his work this year and probably would not do anything stupid this early in the year.Shame though as he was promising a lot!

But they wouldn't play. There would be three extra players named, and if one of our other players went down during the week, they could omit THEM from the squad instead of one of the other three. Now, NAP Cup seems to be pretty lax about the naming of squads, so if that happens, Roos might still be able to take somebody else and put them in, but it does seem odd.

There was a bizarre (I thought) quote from Roos last week about O'Dwyer which may partly explain what is going on.

''With Matty, one of the things we have spoken about is being confident, but a lot of times it's the off-field stuff they have to get right first, and that's often one of the areas where he continues to struggle and lets himself down with a bit at times. He now has to let the coaches see he wants to be here and wants to make a career out of it.''
O'Dwyer says it's now or never at Swans

Yeah I thought the same thing when I read it. He's not high profile so not much was made of it at the time.

Really like seeing that from Roos, it's now up to O'Dwyer to make a name for himself and not take his AFL career for granted.

My theory on O'Dwyer is that he was squeezed out when Shaw came in. With Shaw, Tag, Mal and Mattner in the team they can't all play on the half-back line even with rotations, so my guess is one of them will play on a wing.

They can't play ALL of them ALL of the time! MOD has had 3 games, Shaw etc hasn't had one, soooo.......And then it will be season proper. They probably know MOD is ok, and they are playing more of the newbies to see how they are going to fit. We have four to ten younguns to test before season proper, as well as fringe types such as MikePyke and etc, and at least half won't be slated for Big School this year. My theory, and I am keeping to it.

I listened closely to Roos in the below interview re the 26 players

                                BigPond Video

he said that the forward line is set except for Braaddy to come back rd 1 is still on target

he also alluded to the two emergencies not playing as he wants max time on field for all players in the 26.

he is rating Rohan very highly especially his defence.

Lewis sounds a certainty to be in the 22 rd 1

Shaw, Mattner, Mal and Tag are a great luxury for backline and midfield roles within a full game - yeah !!

only quoted Kennedy and McGlynn as solid but said Kennedy has alot of potential and is young still where as McGlynn offers him great flexibility to play different roles for the team

                                For me:

im amazed Moore is ahead of Hannes !

Hannes needs another two qtrs at least i feel.........

                                pumped !!
