    The Rise of Marty

Midfield stint beckons for Mattner - Official AFL Website of the Sydney Swans Football Club

IT'S the selection poser that has intrigued Sydney Swans fans throughout the summer - how will coach Paul Roos fit his four running defenders into the one team?

The return of Tadhg Kennelly and Nick Malceski's strong pre-season form, along with Rhyce Shaw's career-best 2009 and Marty Mattner's reliability has generated plenty of speculation among pre-season track watchers.

The quartet played together for the first time against Essendon at Blacktown Olympic Park last weekend and will reprise their roles against North Melbourne at Narrandera on Friday night.

Mattner said the Swans' selection committee had an unenviable task in managing the four attacking half-backs.
Probably our best recruit in the past few years.

He's working his way into contention as best recruit, isn't he. Then again, Rhyce Shaw is no slouch. But I would love to see Marty on the burst, finishing with one of his goals....its a good thing all round.

Shaw's biggest assets are his tenacity and his running, his skills are pretty ordinary.
Marty offers much more than Shaw does, IMHO. he has a rather complete set of skills, without being an outright star.

IIRC he wanted to play on nthe wing when at Adelaide. I reckon a move to the wing for him could have a huge impact on our fortunes in 2010.

Mattner did play on the wing for North Adelaide, he also played HFF and started with Adelaide in the Forward Pocket & on the ball. I saw him play a few games for Adelaide & he kicked some amazing goals on the run & from difficult angles. I always wondered what prompted his shift back into the defence? I know he went through a period when his delivery was a bit sloppy but he was an asset kicking goals on the run & I think he still makes too many mistakes in defence. I also think Bevan has been moved from defence because the experiment to make him a defender failed & with Smith, Kennelly & a few new prospects we no longer need him there. Marty is a strait through runner with a huge boot so I would have thought on ball would have been a shoo in for him well before this.
