Why is Goodes hated by Victorians? (not including Victorian-based Swans fans)

I was recently looking through that other footy forum. And I saw all these comments written by victorian club fans hating Goodesy. Maybe im naive, but even when there was all that 'protected species' stuff, i thought that was largely respect for his playing calibre, much like Reiwolt and Ablett are protected throughout games by the umpires (whether true or not, I still get that impression when watching games).

But upon reading some threads on 'the most hated player in the AFL' i was pretty shocked to see his name thrown around. Can anyone tell me why? I mean he is our captain, does loads of community work, and is respected by players, coaches and umpires alike. So whats with the lingering hate for a gun like Goodes? I dont hate Reiwolt because he is protected in games, I love to watch him play.

I remember last year watching us play Cartlon with some Carlton supporting mates and they were all getting @@@@ty talking how much they hated Goodes because he was too good.

I'll be howled down here but if Goodes played for another club there would be some on here that would probably hate him too. I think it's perceived by other clubs that Goodes gets a good run with the Umpires and the judiciary. There's one thing that people hate is a protected species.

Also the Jealousy argument doesn't exactly pan out because Ablett is the best player in the competition and seems to be well respected by other clubs.

Pretty close, Goodes has been inconsistent across his whole career, probably less so now but even in his Brownlow years he has started the season slowly and still goes missing in some games. Compared to the usual golden boy brownlow winners I'd put my hand on my heart and ay he's probably the least consistent of all of them.

Now the trouble with that is that the majority of AFL loving public in the southern states might only see him play one or two games a year. If it happens to when he's at his worst then all of a sudden it's..........."how the hell did he win the Brownlow, he was shocking when he played us".

Add that to the arguably good run we do tend to get at the tribunal (which tends to be very visible compared any other exposure we get) and the inevitable but completely and demonstrably wrong extension of that to getting a good run with the umps all adds up to........

Agree that being mercurially brilliant can sometime also mean you are mercurially bad but that hasnt been really the case in recent years and the image of the soft treatment by umpires is isolated to a few instances over a lot of years. At the end of the day they hate him becasue he is really very good and most of the time very fair.

i remember taking the longish drive down (up?) to canberra last year against the doggies who belted us and made the drive back VERY LONG.... but i was standing around bulldogs and pies supporters and they were absolutely spewing every time he got the ball, they wholeheartedly agreed he was best on ground even though the dogs towelled us.

Goodes did some pretty low things a couple of years ago, but who is supended for the Vulcan death grip?
Most people seem to love and respect Judd. After all he has ONE brownlow.

Do people love Judd? Not the impression I get. The players who get the most loathing are generally the very very good ones - Carey, Buckley are obvious examples. It helps if they're seen as arrogant, or dirty but mostly it is just because they are very very good.

Well, the media do at least. Bit of a golden haired boy.

Racism. He is a blackfella that does not play like the stereotypical indigenous player. He plays like a Kouta, or a Judd, or anyone who is really good and white. No one will admit it, but that probably has a lot to do with it. The only indigenous players that are liked are the ones that can be condescended to. Goodes you have to look up to, because of his ability and because of his stature. People want to bring him down because they don't want to think that an abo could be better than them. I love him. I would go as far to sat that (after Davo) he is my favourite player ever.

My two cents include a Mark Wargh-type comparison; for whatever reason athletes like Goodes and M. Waugh have a laconic look about them when they work. Those in the know have no doubt that these players bust their guts but to the casual observer it looks as if their just not trying and doing it easy. If one adds to that perception the 2 Brownlow Medals I think you start to see a picture of why there are some that disapprove of our beloved champion.

There's probably not one answer, players get liked or disliked by opposing fans for any number of reasons. I know that for me when it comes to Cooney, for example, I'm somewhere between anger and wistfulness (that he doesn't play for us) with a touch of awe.

I was puzzled about this so I went over to BF and checked out their 'most hated player' thread. Result: Milne first, daylight second, Judd third and the rest also ran.
No mention of Goodes. I'd be interested to see where he is mentioned in that category.
As for hating players, I know there are lots of ferals following football, and that even for the reasonably sane there are players that incur our wrath at times, but HATE? Either a bit of hyperbole or an idiotic and total loss of perspective.
As for Goodes, he is one of the greats. If anyone 'hates' him, I agree with the one who said envy. I'm glad he's ours, and even if he played for (name your most 'hated' club) I'd still admire him, and probably envy the club.
