Rnd 8 (finally) and 9 are up.

Interesting to see Goodes leads the Clanger count by a fair margin, and quite a low efffective disposal.
Says a lot about his season so far.

                      Thanks Scott

Only 38% TOG for Pykey. If they're going to play him that little, they might as well go with Playfair/White as the 2nd ruckman as we probably don't need 3 talls in the forward line.
76% and 72% TOG for Hanners and Kennedy and they were our best 2 midfielders. Get more time into them Roosy!

I assume the latter 2 are still young and need to build up their engines still, thus giving them time to freshen up regularly.

As for Pyke, he doesn't need the big engine as much, they could've rested him in the goal square, stretched the defence, on the odd occasion when the ball got down there. But then with Mummy haven't a great game, maybe he wasn't needed.

On the other hand, Pyke got 19 taps with that 38% game time. Some ruckmen play 70% game time and are happy to get that. Playfair/White would be stoked to reach double figures in that time. In fact, Pyke is getting 18 hitouts a game with an average of 57% TOG. If you only count his games as second ruckman (so with Mummy in the side), he's getting 48% TOG and 18.5 hitouts. Given that being on the ground is Pyke's main weakness (lol), the fact that he's getting lots of hitouts (and they're bloody good ones, too) with minimal TOG is a good argument for keeping him in the side. Play him long minutes, and we lose Mumford's attack value, and Mumford can do just as good a job with taps. Play him short minutes, we still get good tap value while Mummy has a breather (he does need a bit of a rest), and while we lose a bit around the ground, Pyke has shown he has the strength and motor to negate an opponent's influence, so we won't get damaged going the other way (at least not too much). It's better than playing White or Playfair and allowing their rucks to get on top in the middle. Pyke can hold the fort around the ground, even if he doesn't add anything himself, and he adds a lot in terms of tap-value, which I think a lot of people underrate.

In short, because I'm waffling a bit: play him long minutes, and it detracts from Mummy's influence around the ground. Play him short minutes, and it gives Mummy the break he needs, puts on hold the ruckmen's influence around the ground (for both teams), and still maintains good hitout value. Putting White or Playfair in there robs our forwardline, robs us of good tapwork, decreases their time on ground overall (as ruck requires greater fitness levels), robbing our forwardline more, and while they may find a bit more of the ball, their opponent will find more of the ball too. All that for an extra fringe player on the bench? I know what you mean about not needing three talls, but I'd rather see Goodes go onto the wing (or even half back, in a Hodge-type role) than drop Pyke and have White or Playfair play second ruck.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!
