Now I didn't realise I had received such vitriol for my comments on LRT's first 2 games, and ridiculed for suggesting that Pyke might be a better option long term! Anyhoo I'll stand by my original comment in that I feel strongly that his downside was worse than his upside. Roos himself said that LRT needed to stop doing anything but stopping his opponent. Happily he has done this very well since I gave him a bake (!) and the good has far outweighed the bad since then....so he listened to my advice....which is good. Still giving up far too many stupid goals, but saving even more than that and getting rid of the ball with less thought than earlier.

On to Pyke...sometimes you cop derision for being ahead of the curve and I copped mine....which makes it just a that little bit less painful when you turn out to be right.

LOL! Pyke coming in and playing ruck when we had nobody else is a very different prospect to him coming in and playing key defence. Don't flatter yourself. LRT for Pyke was always a terrible, horrific suggestion.

I'm pretty sure Pyke was sent up back for the twos to broaden his game, not to blood him as a defender. Like Lewis Johnston now.

It's not an option this week. We're down to our last Canadian.

Mike Pyke -- this is your moment!! Screw it up and the RWO boards will resound with the clatter of 10,000 "I told you sos".

But don't let that put you off.

Roosy gave him that advice last season, by his own statement. He has done it all season this year, and that was also acknowledged by the coach.. I think it's OTT for you to even pretend to take credit. I just hope you had your tongue in cheek...suggesting Pyke for LRT was ludicrous.

I'm not sure about that. Sure, in the short term Pyke's best position is in defence. But we have two reasonably young, solid ruckmen who will only be out of the side due to injury and/or suspension. Pyke will have a very tough time trying to break into that. I'd say he's being groomed for a key defensive (or forward, even) post in the long-term, and in the mean time will be a backup ruckman.

Interesting use of the word ludicrous....LRT was HORRIBLE at the start of the season, .....laughable errors....no question in my mind that the idea of Mike Pyke being a better player than LRT was at the start of this year is not ludicrous at all.....to those who suggest Pyke was merely sent back to "broaden his game," might I suggest he was sent back to "broaden our squad." We do not have one single KP defender ready to cover Reg, LRT or Bolton,

Obviously if the coaches send Pykey to CHB in the weeks following my suggestion, than I am clearly the go to man as far as the coaches are concerned....how could you even question that?

As for LRT pulling his socks up and playing better, well, clearly, again the coaches lack the communication skills to get through to him and only a concise word from me could do the trick. To repeat, it's not ludicrous....it's unlikely...but Pyke is bigger, stronger, quicker and smarter so tell me again why it's ludicrous that he could be better than LRT after he (Pyke) plays 100 games?

I'm sure elements of that are more than a little tongue in cheek, but LRT horrible at the start of the season? In the first couple of games, he made a couple of errors early on before settling down for the rest of the game. He was also a very tight defender. He has maintained the defensive side, and looked a bit more settled. Honestly, if you think LRT was horrible early on, and that Pyke would have been a better key defensive option.....

And of course Pyke could be better than LRT after 100 games. But he hasn't played 100 games. You were suggesting that Pyke might be a better option than LRT RIGHT NOW, and that is just idiotic.

What I don't understand is why Roos does not play Pyke in the same style as the other defenders. We have all seen the footage of him playing against the All Blacks. He is a big man PLUS he can run yet, we have never seen him run with the ball. He always gets rid of the ball within 15 seconds of getting it.

This may be a confidence thing but a Pyke at full pace palming off attempted tackles would be a great sight.

People bag Pyke and other players as not having the ability to play AFL but they are in the team and for Pyke especially having only been in Australia for a year and a bit, it has been an outstanding achievement.

Most possessions take way under 15 seconds. You do realise you have to bounce the ball right? Pyke's probably not very good at this skill running at full pace.

I would like to see him make it, big opportunity in next two weeks. It's awareness level that seems the challenge, given rucks play into their early 30s, nor reason why he still doesn't have a reasonable carrer ahead

Seems like a very serious guy though
