I think it's one thing between players, but an entirely different thing between players and club officials. The playing field belongs to the players, the coaching staff are only guests for the sole purpose of delivering their instructions to their players.

But it's that grub Milne we're talking about. Normal rules shouldn't apply with this moron. Milne is the only player that would make me do something as abhorent as sticking up for someone from Collingwood.

Agreed. Rightly, the bigger issue seems to be over Malthouse lying at the press conference about the fact that he'd addressed his comments to Milne than what he actually said.

Considering the AFL players association launched their support of a campaign against homophobia you'd hope they had some words for Milne if what he is alleged to have said to Licuria is true.
I don't know much about him off field but he conducts himself onfield in a pretty ordinary way in terms of sportsmanship IMO so not a player you naturally wish well or a heap of success to. I know plenty will say that you should harden up and sledging is a part of footy blah blah, a lah the Australian cricket teams' behaviour but its not my cup of tea.
As for Malthouse not sure how you can just switch off the emotion after a confrontation like that and then coach with a clear head. Pretty silly and even sillier in that the Pies didn't fire up in support and lift their performance.

The Pies did lift but that is as good as they get. Going no where fast as usual. Such a shame!!!!!!!!!!

The article I read in the SMH said that Milne called Licuria a "F....... homo" and Malthouse an "old c....". In the video Licuria is definitely saying something to Milne, to which Milne reacts, but what is said is not mentioned. The simple fact is that coaches at the AFL level shouldn't be sledging players from the opposing team, especially calling them rapists (dropped case aside). What I couldn't believe was the mention of the anti homophobic stance of the AFL in relation to the comment of Milne to Licuria. I mean you can call a guy a "f...... homo" whether he is gay or not on the football field. I don't know the sexual preference of Licuria nor do I care, but after that mention I think people will conclude that Licuria is gay, whether he wanted the world to know or not. If he's not then that makes the reference even more absurd.

I disagree. It is said as a slur and regardless of Licuria's sexuality it is a derogatory comment, and paints a picture that Milne believes that homosexuals are beneath him (in actuallity Stephen there isn't much beneath you). It says to the wider community that's it's okay to judge someone based on their sexuality and that one sexuallity is inferior to others, all of which is patently absurd. As such, I don't think anyone can make a disparaging remark about sexuality, on the football field or off. It paints a bad picture and perpuates the myth, and that should be avoided. If people erronously infer Licuria's sexuality from this then more fool them.

No - not acceptable. Whether you agree with it or not, in this day and age there are certain comments you should not make, whether on the field or off.
